Gate operators, gate openers, and automatic gates all serve a valuable role in home security. Likewise, commercial spaces with high-traffic areas also need heavy duty swing gate openers for the same security purpose.
They reduce the need for manual effort when operating the gate, which can be cumbersome in high-traffic areas. Automatic gate openers also help increase security.
More advanced systems are fitted with surveillance cameras and telephone entry systems which monitor the coming and going of visitors.
What Are Heavy Duty Swing Gate Openers?
Automatic gate openers are generally divided into two main types: swing gates and sliding gates. A sliding gate opener operates on a track that moves sideways when opening and closing. This is popular in gates with limited space since sliding gates don’t need clearance for them to swing.
Swing gates are the traditional types with gate openings that swing inward and outward. They can be dual swing gates with parts at the center like a book.
With the help of hydraulics and electronic and mechanical swing gate operators, a swing gate can be opened automatically. These gates are often observed in airports, hospitals, schools, transportation hubs, and other public and commercial properties.
How Does an Automatic Swing Gate Work?
Technology has brought us into the realm where convenience meets security and reliability. Thanks to automatic gates, we are given the chance to experience these upgrades.
Residential swing gates are automated for homeowners to access easily, while commercial and public properties also benefit. This function is handy in high-traffic entrances because you don’t need anyone there to manually open and close the gate. Instead, it uses a motor to move the gate.
The gate opener motor can be a hydraulic ram, threaded shaft, or underground motor. In an automatic swing gate, a control motor is attached to the hinge of the gate.
It’s the part that receives the signal or frequency from an access control or remote control device. It then signals the gate operators to open and close automatically when a verified radio signal is detected.
Some gate opener systems also use vehicle recognition tags, which are placed on or in the vehicle. When the scanner detects an authorized tag, it automatically signals the gate to open.
Aside from remote controls and recognition tags, some credentials may include PIN codes, key fobs, and even biometric data.
Benefits of Swing Gate Openers
The best part about automatic driveway gates is their remote operation. You have the convenience of opening or closing the door to grant or deny entry. Compared to a standard gate, an automatic swing gate provides a ton of benefits.
Swing gate openers are advantageous for the following reasons:
- Flexible operation for residential, commercial, and public gates
- Reduces manual labor
- Works in all weather conditions
- Can be configured for AC, DC or solar power
- Works with remotes, key fobs and smartphones
- Infrared detection can sense incoming traffic

I have an iron dual swing gate that I know is pretty heavy (roughly 9’ x 10-11’). I’m sure the previous owner had them made; so, I don’t have access to any information on them. What’s the best way to figure out how much they weigh so that I can buy the proper arms/motor?
