The company started in the early 1920s when Otto Froeschl got the idea of making 32ᵒ angled nose pliers. Otto, together with his brother Paul and Henry J. Wilde, established the Wilde Drop Forge and Tool Company in 1922. In 1928, they filed for patent protection of Otto’s innovative pliers, which have now become the standard pliers design throughout the world.

The company ventured into private-labeling for brands like Montgomery Ward and JCPenney’s. The company was trademarked The Pliersmiths for its patented Wilde Wrench.

During World War II, Wilde Tool was commissioned to manufacture bayonets until the war was over.
