A key switch looks a lot like the kind of lock you would find on a typical door. They function the same, but rather than using the key to unlock a door, you are using a key to control whatever the key switch is linked to. 

It's common to find key switches on any kind of automatic gate system. They can act as a backup in case of a power or system failure to manually operate a gate. They are also often made mandatory on these systems so emergency services can bypass an electronic gate in case of an emergency. 

Key switches can also offer an extra layer of security. With key switches, a user will only be able to use the control if they have the specially shaped key assigned to the unit. This is why they are often used in areas that need to be tamper-resistant, which can be especially useful in commercial applications.
