Garage Door Safety Sensor Replacement: Which Kit Fits Your Opener

If you searched for part 41A5034, you searched for a part the manufacturer no longer makes. Chamberlain still lists the number, and only to tell you it is gone.

Its replacement costs about thirty dollars, and it covers a model list you should check rather than assume. Here is how to match the right kit to what is hanging in your garage, including the one older sensor family that neither kit will replace.

Two different dates, and only one of them is about fitment

These get mixed up constantly, so separate them before you shop.

  • January 1, 1993 is the regulatory date. Consumer Product Safety Commission rules require residential openers built on or after that date to meet the entrapment protection requirements of UL 325. Those call for an external device: photoelectric sensors, a door edge sensor, or another giving equivalent protection.

  • 1997 is a product compatibility boundary, and it belongs to Chamberlain's replacement kits rather than to the law. The discontinued 041A5034 was sold for use with all garage door openers made after 1997, and its successor carries the phrase manufactured after 1997 only.

So the 1997 date tells you whether a specific kit is listed for your opener. It does not tell you whether your opener was required to have sensors, and it is not a safety cutoff. Find your build date on the label inside the opener housing, usually beside the model number, or on the motor end panel of older units.

If the opener predates 1997, Chamberlain excludes it from these kits and you need the parts diagram for your model instead. Whether the opener is worth repairing at all is a separate question, and one for a qualified technician rather than a price comparison: age, condition, the type of entrapment protection fitted, parts availability and door balance all feed into it.

Either way, treat the sensors as structural. Chamberlain describes them as a required safety device that must be connected and aligned correctly before the opener will move in the down direction. On an opener that relies on them, a dead pair stops the door.

Part 41A5034 is discontinued. Here is what replaces it

The current part is 041-0136, which Chamberlain sells as the Safety Sensor Kit for 2021 to present at $33.99. It is listed for use with various LiftMaster and Chamberlain belt drive and chain drive openers featuring myQ technology and SecureView video, manufactured after 1997 only.

Two details confirm it is the direct successor rather than a similar product. The 041-0136 listing carries 041A5034 and 41A5034 among its alternate part numbers, along with 2610459. And the old 041A5034 page now shows a discontinued notice with a pointer to find a replacement. Same part family, new number.

That alias list explains a lot. It is why the same pair turns up under several numbers on shelf labels and in search results: 41A5034 without the leading zero, 041A5034 with it, an internal number, and a UPC style code on packaging. Chamberlain groups them on the current kit's own page, so a listing quoting an old number is not automatically the wrong product. Confirm against the manufacturer's model list rather than trusting a retailer's cross-reference.

Chamberlain publishes the model list on the compatibility tab of the part page. It runs from current wall mount units such as the RJO101 through belt drive models like the B4613T, B4643T and B6753T, with several discontinued openers alongside them. Check your own model against that list before ordering rather than matching by how the sensor looks, because the housings changed less than the wiring behind them.

The exception most buyers miss: 041A4373A

This is the part of the story that catches people, and it is printed right on the old kit's page. Chamberlain's note reads that the kit is not a replacement for 041A4373A safety sensors, and does not support models manufactured before 1997.

Read that carefully, because it names two separate exclusions in one sentence. One is the date. The other is an earlier sensor family that needs a different part, and Chamberlain does not tell you which openers carry it or what replaces it. That is why a buyer who checks only the year can still order the wrong kit and find out on a ladder.

If the number on your existing sensor is 041A4373A, do not substitute by appearance. Pull the model number off the opener, open the replacement parts diagram for that model, and order the sensor the diagram names. It is slower than guessing and far more likely to arrive correct.

Finding that number takes a minute. It is printed on the sensor housing, usually on the back or on a small label facing the wall, so you may have to loosen the bracket to read it. Do that before you order rather than after, because the two families look similar enough from six feet away that plenty of people have bought the wrong kit twice.

Eyes only, or eyes and brackets?

This is the real decision at checkout, and Chamberlain flags it on the 041-0136 page: for a complete replacement kit that includes both the safety sensor eyes and the safety sensor brackets, the part is 041-0365-000.

  • The LiftMaster 041-0136 kit is $32.99 and gives you both eyes plus wire and connectors, on the assumption your existing brackets are reusable.

  • The LiftMaster 041-0365-000 kit is $38.99 and adds the brackets, which matters more often than people expect.

Go and look at the brackets before you choose, because this one is decided on site rather than on a spec sheet. Order the bracket kit if the brackets are bent, corroded, loose, or if the adjustment hardware is seized or missing. The wingnut is the part doing the real work: it lets you aim the eye by hand and lock it there, so one that will not turn with your fingers means you cannot align a brand new sensor either. If the brackets are sound and the wingnuts move, the cheaper kit is the right call.

It is worth a look because brackets live four inches off a concrete floor that gets wet whenever it rains, and they fail quietly while the sensor takes the blame.

What comes in the box, and what you still need

The kit is more complete than the product photo suggests, and knowing that saves a second order. Chamberlain lists the current 041-0136 contents as follows.

  • Both eyes: a sending sensor with an LED and a receiving sensor with an LED. On the discontinued kit Chamberlain specified these as amber for the sender and green for the receiver.

  • Two conductor wire and five wire connectors come in the box, so a damaged wire run does not need a separate purchase.

  • Replacement hardware is included, though not itemized for the current kit. The discontinued version listed two wingnuts and two 1/4-20 inch round head bolts. Check the current parts list if you need the exact contents, and note that brackets are a separate kit either way.

What is not in the box is the bracket pair, unless you bought the 041-0365-000. Nor is a sun shield, which is a separate part and a separate problem. Give yourself twenty minutes and a helper for the swap. One person holds the eye and watches the LED while the other closes the door from the wall control, which is far quicker than climbing down to check after every small adjustment.

Are garage door safety sensors universal?

No, and the two exclusions above are the proof. A kit that covers hundreds of models across two brands still stops at a date and still refuses one earlier family. Universal would mean neither restriction existed.

The practical version of the question is narrower and has a better answer: will this kit work on my opener?
