LiftMaster wireless garage door openers offer excellent keyless entry that’s easy to use and maintain while keeping your home and garage safe. This garage opener system features an integrated reader that communicates with your wireless keyless entry, while the wall-mounted door panel is installed with wiring.
While both of these mechanisms operate on their own, sometimes the keypad or the door control actions do not function properly.
LiftMaster Keypad Not Working? Discover 10 Possible Causes and Solutions
There are a few reasons why wireless keypads stop working or fail completely, which can often be repaired easily:
1. The Keypad Needs Reprogramming
When you install a new keypad or replace the battery, you’ll need to reprogram the keyless entry before using it. Your Liftmaster keypad programming instructions provide a guide on how to add, change or program your PIN code.
If your first attempt at reprogramming doesn’t work, you’ll need to clear the garage door opener’s memory, then try the process again. The remote controls will also need to be cleared at the same time before the system is programmed again.
2. The Battery Needs Replacement
If your garage door keypad’s battery may need replacement if it’s depleted or the wrong type of battery. Most LiftMaster keyless entry systems require a 9-volt battery, and older keypads are compatible with a 12-volt battery. The owner’s manual provides information on keypad programming instructions and how to replace batteries, which can be done quickly.
3. There Is a Signal Interference
Some specific surfaces or locations are prone to interfering with your keyless entry system’s signal. You can remove the entry system from the mounting surface to test the keypad to see if it works, which can indicate if the issue relates to where it’s installed or if it’s due to a mechanical failure.
If you need to adjust the positioning of the keypad even slightly, a piece of work or a slightly different location for mounting the device can make a significant improvement and improve the signal.
4. The Temporary PIN Code Is Expired
When you set a temporary PIN, it lasts for a limited time before it expires and no longer works. This situation can explain why your keypad code isn’t working, which means you’ll need to clear the memory and reset the wireless system by pressing the “Learn” button to establish a new PIN.
5. Button Issues on the Keypad
It’s common for one or more buttons to not work if the garage door keypad is broken or damaged. You may encounter this problem if excessive debris or dust build-up doesn’t get wiped off regularly. If just one button is not working, you can simply work around it by resetting a new PIN and avoiding the one key that doesn’t function anymore. Investing in a new keypad is best if more keys stop working or stick together.
6. Damaged Wiring
When you check the keypad, batteries, and overall condition of the garage door opener, you may not find any issues until you review the wiring. Some wires can wear out due to system damage or severe weather conditions. It’s important to review the battery cover, motor unit, and other parts of the wireless entry system to determine if any wires are detached, which can be fixed or replaced.
7. Outdated, Old Keypad
If a keyless entry pad doesn’t work consistently or at all, this may be due to the age of the device. While Liftmaster garage and overhead door openers are durable and long-lasting, ongoing exposure to severe weather conditions, such as humidity, snow, or rain, can wear down the device.
Generally, keypads last ten years, though it’s important to look for cracks, or damaged keys, which may indicate a garage opener repair is needed. If you’ve had the keypad for nearly ten years, you’ll want to consider a full replacement.
8. Entering the Incorrect PIN
It’s not uncommon to forget a new PIN or temporary code, which can lock your keypad once you’ve entered the code incorrectly several times. This security measure is essential in preventing anyone from using the keyless entry system until a new code can be programmed following a reset. The resetting process is quick and easy, and you can enter a new PIN that will immediately become activated.
When resetting doesn’t initially work, you can reboot the keyless entry system and attempt the reset again, which clears the memory and allows you to set a new security code. In most cases, rebooting and resetting works quickly and effectively, though if this fails, a technician can repair the keypad, or a new installation may be required.
9. The Keys Are Stuck
Keypad keys can become stuck and difficult to press when there is an accumulation of dirt, grime, and dust. The garage door opener keypad won’t function when this happens, even if you enter the correct PIN.
Fortunately, you can fix this problem by cleaning the keypad with a damp cloth. If there is a dust build-up inside the device, a soft brush or can of compressed air can remove dust that can interfere with your keypad’s functions.
10. The Code Is the Malfunctioning
When the keypad code or garage door remote malfunctions, this may not impact the mechanisms of the overhead door, or its components, though it can prevent the system from working correctly. Several reasons the code can malfunction include accidentally entering numbers or a PIN that interferes with the correct password.
While many reasons could cause this problem, it’s best to reprogram the keypad before you consider repairs or more extensive assessments, as it could be a simple error. If your attempt to reset the code isn’t successful, it’s best to contact a technician for assistance.

I installed a KPW5 in the ASE Protective Hood on a block wall. Now it appears that the signal strength has been diminished. I end up having to enter the code multiple times before the gate activates.
Is there a way to extent the internal antenna on the KPW5 ? Pull it outside of the enclosure ?

I can’t get both my garage door opener and my keypad to work. As soon as I get the keypad to work, the car remote stops working. When I reprogram the car remote to work, the keypad stops working. How can I get them both to work?
