Demystifying LiftMaster Blinking Codes: How to Decode and Fix Them | All Security Equipment

Worried about the blinking light codes in your garage door opener and what they mean? Don’t fret. The LiftMaster blinking codes are your helpful indicator of door problems and are easy to troubleshoot.

Sometimes, you will notice one flash, two, or up to ten lights blinking, coupled with a malfunctioning door.

The particular number of times the light indicator blinks points to a specific problem in the system. Knowing what they mean reduces the guesswork in repairing a faulty door.

What Does a Blinking Code Mean?

LiftMaster blinking codes are troubleshooting guides that specify an error in the unit. It alerts the owner to use the door cautiously and fix the issue soon.

How the garage door opener light flashes help you diagnose the error or broken parts that need replacement. The blinking light codes are almost the same in garage door openers.

However, every brand might have slight differences and changes, even in LiftMaster garage door opener models. Check your owner’s manual for the specific unit to diagnose the problem properly.

Demystifying the LiftMaster Blinking Codes

Every LiftMaster garage door opener has an LED light bulb indicator. You can find this on the bottom panel at the back of the unit. The LED indicator is found under one of the light lenses for door openers with dual arrow lights.

The common problems related to the number of blinks in the indicator are:

  • One blink – disconnected wire in the safety sensor
  • Two blinks – reversed wires or a short in the wiring
  • Four blinks – misalignment or obstructed safety sensors

If your LiftMaster opener has dual light with arrow key indicators, the arrow flashes mean:

  • 1 Up 1 Down – disconnected or cut wires
  • 1 Up 2 Down – short or reversed
  • 1 Up 4 Down – misalignment or obstruction

If the overhead door opener is blinking 10 times and the door does not close, it means a misalignment of the safety reversing sensor. Or maybe, the door and its remote control are simply just locked.

How to Troubleshoot LiftMaster Blinking Codes

Once you figure out the LiftMaster blinking codes, you will have a rough idea of where to look. It is best to call a professional and inspect your door system if it is beyond your expertise.

One Flash: Wiring Problems

A disconnected or cut wire disables the door from functioning and triggers the blinking codes. The wires can sometimes get frayed or pinched, causing the sensor to lose connection with the door opener.

  1. Check the wires behind the wall next to the sensors if your home is pre-wired for a door opener.
  2. Inspect the wires on the LiftMaster garage door opener by lightly tugging at them to see if anything is loose or broken.
  3. Replace or reattach wires when needed and see if this solves your LiftMaster error.

Two Flashes: Short or Reversed Connection

The garage door safety sensor has black and white wires, which will fail to function if not connected properly. When the safety sensor wires are shorted out, the LiftMaster blinking codes will go off.

  1. Check that the safety sensor white wires are connected to the #2 or white terminal.
  2. The white/black wires must be connected to the #3 grey terminal.

If the garage door opener flashes twice, it can also be because the LOCK button is ON. It means your remote control is locked out. Press the LOCK button on the door opener and press the remote control if it works.

Four Flashes: Misaligned Sensors

Garage doors are equipped with infrared sensors located on both sides of the garage door. They have what is called photo eyes or sensor eyes.

These sensor eyes need to be aligned with each other to create an invisible line across the door. Its function is to detect obstruction and reverse the door for safety in keyless entry.

To troubleshoot it, just clean and align the sensors.

  1. Loosen the wing nut on the receiving sensor and clean the lens.
  2. Realign the receiving sensor with the sending sensor until the LED light glows steadily.
  3. Tighten the wing nut and secure the mounting bracket in place.

Uncommon LiftMaster Blinking Codes and Issues

Three Flashes: Door Control Issues

Inspect the door control wires if the door gives out three flashes and the LED screen is not working.

  1. Remove the door control from the wall.
  2. Disconnect the wires from the back of the door control and touch the wires together. If the door activates: replace the door control. If the door does not budge: disconnect the wires from the motor unit.
  3. Find a short across the red and white terminals with jumper wires. If the door activates, replace the door control wires.

Note: The steps will not work on Security+ 2.0 LiftMaster garage door openers. If the door LED screen is on but not working, replace the door control.

Five Flashes: RPM Sensor Problems

The sensor LED light will blink five times if it is not detecting RPMs (rotations-per-minute) which can imply mechanical stoppage.

If the opener operates normally, you may need to power-cycle the unit by unplugging it for 5 seconds and reapplying power.

Check the garage door's balance if the opener hums and turns off. In this case, you may need a technician for door repair.

Six Flashes: Motor Circuit/Control Board Failure

A garage door motor rarely fails. When it has a problem with the motor circuit, the technician may need to replace the logic board of the motor unit.

Greetings
LiftMaster MyQ 1D1675
Codes are flashing 4-1. Sender sensor light is solid yellow. Receiver sensor is solid green. Wiring appears to be sound and is solidly seated in the head unit. Operator runs a short distance in either direction and then stops. If I try to program the range in either direction the operator runs a short distance and then stops.
I messed with this for a long time yesterday and the machine began to operate normally. 24 hours later it has started flashing 4-1 again and moving the door only a short distance.
Thank you very much for any help.
