Prep the Location
Install the fire extinguisher where your access is not obstructed. The fire extinguisher should be easily seen. Avoid placing it in an area where you may have to potentially cross fire to retrieve it.

Do Not Functionally Test the Unit
Testing the unit will cause it to gradually lose pressure and can ultimately render it ineffective. Discharging even just a small amount to test the fire extinguisher will decrease the pressure inside the canister.
You can determine the fullness by weighing and reading the pressure gauge. All fire extinguishers must be recharged immediately after each use.
Tag the Fire Extinguisher
The date when the unit was placed into service and inspected must be recorded. Have the unit inspected with a thorough check once a year to ensure that it is ready for use.
Take a quick look at the fire extinguisher at regular intervals monthly to see if it is in its operating condition. Additionally, the pictogram instructions must be legible and fastened to the cylinder.

Amerex recommends that the fire extinguisher be emptied and subjected to maintenance procedures every six years. The six-year time commences from the date of periodic recharging or hydrostatic testing.
