Usually we receive the following questions from customers that are installing a Linear access control system:
Question: What’s the maximum distance you can go with an RS-485 connection?
Answer: The RS-485 is limited to a total of 4,000 feet. This is a per-network distance meaning the total length of all cable runs within a network should not exceed 4,000 feet.
Question: How Far can I run an RS-232 (serial) Connection?
Answer: 40 to 50 feet (12m - 15m) is the practical maximum distance using Enhanced CAT5 cable. Some technicians have made longer runs, but this isn't recommended.
Although these topics are very useful to do a correct installation, always check with the instruction manual provided with the system and remember that we always recommend hiring a qualified company/installer to do the job.
