Usage Class

Class I - Residential Vehicular Gate Operator. A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in garages or parking areas associated with a residence of one-to four single families.

Class II - Commercial/General Access Vehicular Gate. A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in a commercial location or building such as a multi-family housing unit (five or more single family units), hotel, garages, retail store, or other buildings accessible by or servicing the general public.

Class III - Industrial/Limited Access Vehicular Gate. A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in an industrial location or building such as a factory or loading dock area or other locations not accessible by or intended to service the general public.

Class IV - Restricted Access Vehicular Gate Operator. A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in a guarded industrial location or building such as an airport security area or other restricted access locations not servicing the general public, in which unauthorized access is prevented via supervision by security personnel.

UL325 Entrapment Protection Requirements

Definitions. ENTRAPMENT: The condition when a person is caught or held in a position that increases the risk of injury. SWING GATE ENTRAPMENT ZONE: Locations between a moving gate or moving, exposed operator components and a counter opposing edge or surface where entrapment is possible up to 1.8 m (6 ft.) above grade. Such locations occur if during any point in travel: a. The gap between the bottom of a moving gate and the ground is greater than 101.6 mm (4″) and less than 406 mm (16″); or b. The distance between the center line of the pivot and the end of the wall, pillar, or column to which it is mounted when in the open or closed position exceeds 101.6 mm (4″).

Requirements. A minimum of two independent monitored entrapment protection devices are required to be installed at each entrapment zone. It is the responsibility of the installer to install external monitored entrapment protection devices for each entrapment zone. The operator will only operate with a minimum of two independent monitored entrapment protection devices installed in either the open or closed direction. If no entrapment zone exists in the other direction, an external entrapment protection device is NOT required in that direction. This operator has an inherent entrapment protection device built-in. The installer MUST provide one additional entrapment protection device for each entrapment zone.

Acceptable entrapment protection device types include: inherent (built into the operator), LiftMaster monitored external photoelectric sensors, and LiftMaster monitored external edge sensors.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

To reduce the risk of INJURY or DEATH: READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS. NEVER let children operate or play with gate controls. Keep the remote control away from children. ALWAYS keep people and objects away from the gate. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE. Test the gate operator monthly. The gate MUST reverse on contact with an object or reverse when an object activates the noncontact sensors. Use the manual release ONLY when the gate is not moving. KEEP GATES PROPERLY MAINTAINED. The entrance is for vehicles ONLY. Pedestrians MUST use separate entrance. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

Safety Installation Information

1. Vehicular gate systems provide convenience and security. Gate systems are comprised of many component parts. The gate operator is only one component. 2. Gate operating system designers, installers, and users must take into account the possible hazards associated with each individual application. 3. A gate operator can create high levels of force in its function as a component part of a gate system. Specific safety features include: Edge Sensors (contact), Photoelectric Sensors, and Instructional and Precautionary Signage. 4. Install the gate operator only when the operator is appropriate for the construction and usage class of the gate, and all exposed pinch points are eliminated or guarded. 5. The gate operator is intended for installation only on gates used for vehicles; pedestrians must be supplied with a separate access opening located so persons will not come in contact with the vehicular gate. 6. The gate must be installed with enough clearance between the gate and adjacent structures to reduce the risk of entrapment. Swinging gates shall not open into public access areas. 7. The gate must work freely in both directions prior to installing the operator. 8. Permanently mounted access controls must be located at least 6 feet (1.8 m) away from any moving part of the gate. 9. Stop and/or Reset buttons must be located in the line-of-sight of the gate. 10. A minimum of two (2) WARNING SIGNS shall be installed so at least one is visible from each side of the gate. 11 and 12. Non-contact and contact sensor placement rules apply per UL 325, including a contact sensor on the bottom edge if that edge sits between 4 and 16 inches above grade at any point in its travel.

Gate Construction Information

Vehicular gates should be installed in accordance with ASTM F2200: Standard Specification for Automated Vehicular Gate Construction. For a copy, contact ASTM directly at 610-832-9585 or www.astm.org.

1.1 Gates shall be constructed per the provisions given for the appropriate gate type. 1.2 Gates shall not fall over more than 45 degrees from vertical when detached from supporting hardware. 1.3 Gates shall have smooth bottom edges, with protrusions not exceeding 0.50 inches (12.7 mm). 1.4 Minimum height for barbed tape is 8 feet above grade; barbed wire is 6 feet above grade. 1.5 An existing gate latch shall be disabled when a manually operated gate is retrofitted with a powered operator. 1.6 A gate latch shall not be installed on an automatically operated gate. 1.8 Gates shall not move under gravity alone if the automatic operator is disconnected. 1.9 A separate pedestrian access shall be provided so pedestrians never contact the moving vehicular gate.

3.1.1.1 The width of an object (wall, pillar, or column) covered by a swing gate in the open position shall not exceed 4 inches (102 mm), measured from the pivot centerline, unless entrapment protection is added. 3.1.1.2 The distance between a fixed object and a swing gate in the open position shall not be less than 16 inches (406 mm), unless entrapment protection is added. 3.2 Class IV vehicular horizontal swing gates shall be designed per security parameters specific to the application.

Site Preparation

Check the national and local building codes BEFORE installation. Refer also to the Site Planning Safety Checklist in the Appendix. Trench and install conduit. Before trenching, contact underground utility locating companies. Conduit must be UL approved for low and high voltage. Vehicle loops allow the gate to stay open when vehicles are obstructing the gate path, suggested for vehicles 14 feet (4.27 m) or longer. Vehicle loops are not required but are recommended. Before installing your Access Control Device(s) be sure to complete a site survey and determine the best device for your site needs.

Entrapment protection devices are required to protect against any entrapment or safety conditions encountered in your gate application. Install a warning sign (two provided) on the inside and outside of the property, where easily visible. Gate must be constructed and installed according to ASTM F2200 standards and must fit specifications of the operator.

Check Your Gate

Gate MUST be level. Gate and gate post MUST be plumb. Gate MUST have a smooth bottom edge, no protrusions should exist. Remove ANY/ALL wheels from the bottom of gate. Gate MUST NOT hit or drag across ground. Gate MUST swing freely and be supported entirely by its hinges.

CAUTION: To AVOID damaging gas, power or other underground utility lines, contact underground utility locating companies BEFORE digging more than 18 inches (46 cm) deep. ALWAYS wear protective gloves and eye protection when changing the battery or working around the battery compartment.

Do's

Weld a horizontal bar across entire gate on any installation for strength. Make sure that the operator is mounted level or it will not function properly. Make sure there is slack in the operator cable. The operator can be mounted on top of the gate frame. The operator must be installed at least 12″ (30 cm) from the ground.

Don'ts

DO NOT install upside down. DO NOT install next to sprinklers or any area that may expose the bottom of operator to water. DO NOT install on uphill or downhill gates. DO NOT install on ANY pedestrian passageways, doorways, or gates. DO NOT over-bend the operator cable. DO NOT weld the crossbar on just a few pickets, or they could bend.

Step 1 Position the Brackets

If this operator is a replacement for a Miracle-One™ operator, use the existing post bracket and gate bracket. If your application is Push-to-Open, refer to the illustrations in the Appendix. The measurements shown are typical for a standard installation.

1. Close the gate. 2. Choose a vertical mounting location for the post bracket. 3. Place a measuring tape under the center of the gate hinge point and measure out dimension A (see chart). 4. Mark the location of the first measurement. 5. Measure out dimension B from the previous mark. 6. Align the post bracket as close as possible above the mark and tack weld it in the desired vertical position. 7. Position a level on the post bracket and measure 35-1/2″ (90.2 cm) over from the center hole of the post bracket and mark the location on the gate. 8. Measure 2-1/4″ (6.4 cm) down from the previous mark and center the gate bracket on this mark, then tack weld it.

NOTES: There should only be a maximum of 4″ (10.2 cm) from the center of the hinge to the edge of the post or column; if greater, entrapment protection for this area is required. While the gate is in the fully open position, the operator needs a clearance of 11-1/4″ (28.6 cm). The ideal installation measurements are A = 7-3/4″ and B = 8-1/2″. If different measurements are used, the sum of A and B cannot be greater than 18″ (45.7 cm).

Step 2 Attach the Brackets

1. Insert the key into the lock and turn it 180 degrees counterclockwise. Turn the release lever 180 degrees counterclockwise. The operator is now in manual mode. 2. Position the operator on the brackets and make sure the operator is level and positioned correctly on the gate. 3. Remove the operator from the gate. 4. Completely weld around the post bracket and gate bracket. NOTE: Brackets may need additional reinforcement by welding flat stock. 5. Attach the operator to the post bracket with the bolt, mounting plate, and nut. 6. Attach the gate bracket to the operator with the bolt, washer, and nut. Tighten the nut until it reaches the bottom of the gate bracket, then turn a half turn more, without overtightening. Make sure the trolley does not reach the fully open or fully closed position.

For dual gate applications, repeat the previous installation steps to install the second operator.

Step 3 Install the Control Box - Standard Control Box

The control box MUST be mounted within 5 feet (1.52 m) of the gate operator. Mount the control box as high as possible for best radio reception. Make sure the control box is level. NOTE: The expansion board DOES NOT need to be removed for a wall or column mount installation.

1. Remove the screws and open the control box. 2. Disconnect the "Main Board" connector from the expansion board. 3. Remove the expansion board by removing the screws. 4. Select the mounting holes (according to your application) and remove the knockouts. 5. Secure the control box to the mounting surface: A. Wall or Column: Use the provided screws (4). B. Post: Use U-bolts and rubber washers (not provided) to ensure a watertight seal, keeping the U-bolts from protruding more than 3/4 inch (this can short the control board). 6. Reinstall the expansion board and connect the "Main Board" connector to the expansion board.

Large Metal Control Box

The control box MUST be mounted within 5 feet (1.52 m) of the gate operator, as high as possible for best radio reception, and level. NOTE: The Large Metal Solar Control Box (Model XLSOLARCONTUL) does not have the electrical outlets or the expansion board.

Wall or Column Mount

1. Open the control box; the door may be removed by opening it 90 degrees. 2. Remove the toroid assembly by loosening the three screws and lifting it up and out. 3. Knock out the 4 corner holes. 4. Secure the control box to the mounting surface using the provided screws (4).

Post Mount

NOTE: The post mount option is not recommended for the 33AH battery application. 1. Open the control box. 2. Select center mounting holes (top and bottom) and knock out with a screwdriver and hammer to accommodate a 3/8″ diameter U-bolt. 3. Secure the control box with U-bolts and rubber washers (not provided) to ensure a watertight seal.

U-Bolt Opening: Standard 3″ Round Pipe = 3-1/2″, Standard 4″ Square Post = 4″, Standard 3″ Square Post = 6″.

WARNING: Disconnect power at the fuse box BEFORE proceeding. Operator MUST be properly grounded and connected in accordance with national and local electrical codes. ALL electrical connections MUST be made by a qualified individual. ALL power and control wiring MUST be run in separate conduit.

Step 4 Earth Ground Rod

Use the proper earth/ground rod for your local area. The ground wire must be a single, whole piece of wire, never spliced. 1. Install the earth/ground rod within 3 feet (.9 m) of the operator. 2. Run wire from the earth/ground rod to the control box. NOTE: If the operator is not grounded properly the range of the remote controls will be reduced and the operator will be more susceptible to lightning and surge damage.

Step 5 Wire the Operator Arm to the Control Board

1. Choose a knockout in the bottom of the control box. 2. Insert the operator cable through the provided watertight connector. 3. Insert the operator cable and watertight connector into the knockout. 4. Slide the connector nut onto the operator cable. 5. Connect the operator cable wires to the connector according to the colored label (white to white, red to red, etc.). 6. Plug the connector into the GATE 1 terminal on the control board. 7. Tighten the connector nut. If installing one operator, proceed to Step 7. If installing two operators, continue to Dual Gate Setup.

Step 6 Dual Gate Setup

There are two options for dual gate communication: wired or wireless. Do not use wired and wireless communication simultaneously. Wired applications have a longer battery standby time than wireless applications. Wireless dual gates require two control boxes, one for each operator arm.

Wireless Setup

1. Choose an operator to be the network primary operator. 2. Press and release the LEARN button on the primary operator; the green XMITTER LED will light. NOTE: The operator will time out of programming mode after 180 seconds. 3. Press and release the LEARN button again; the yellow NETWORK LED will light. 4. Press and release the OPEN test button to assign this operator as network primary. 5-6. Repeat the LEARN button sequence on the second operator. 7. Press and release the CLOSE test button to assign this operator as network second. Both operators will beep and the yellow NETWORK LEDs will turn off, indicating success.

To deactivate: press LEARN once, then press LEARN again, then press and hold LEARN for 5 seconds until the NETWORK LED blinks and turns off. Repeat on the other operator.

Wired Setup

Install a second operator arm, then install the extension cable and junction box. Before digging, contact local underground utility locating companies. 1. Trench across the driveway to bury the extension cable, using PVC conduit. 2. Open the junction box. 3. Select mounting holes and drill two holes large enough for the watertight connectors. 4. Mount the junction box within 3 feet (0.9 m) of the second operator. 5-7. Route the operator cable and extension cable through the watertight connectors into the junction box. 8. Connect the wires from the extension cable and operator cable to the terminal block connector (like-colored wires facing each other). 9-11. Secure the wires, tighten the connector nuts, and reinstall the cover.

1-7. Wire the secondary operator arm to the control board through a knockout, watertight connector, and the GATE 2 terminal, following the same colored-wire matching process as Gate 1.

Set the Bipart Delay (single control box)

Occasionally in dual gate installations, one gate needs to open first and close second, such as with an ornamental overhang or a solenoid lock. This is the Primary gate and connects to the GATE 1 terminal. The BIPART DELAY switch on the control board needs to be set to ON.

Set the Bipart Delay (dual control box)

BIPART DELAY: used where a mag-lock, solenoid lock, or decorative overlay requires one gate to close before the other. SYNCHRONIZED CLOSE: used where one gate travels a longer distance; set BIPART DELAY to ON for both control boxes to synchronize closing.

WARNING: ALL gate operator systems REQUIRE two independent entrapment protection systems for each entrapment zone. This operator has an inherent entrapment protection device built-in; the installer MUST provide one additional device per entrapment zone. 2. The operator will NOT run unless a minimum of one external device is connected in either the open or closed direction. There are three options for wiring external entrapment protection devices. These inputs are for monitored devices only, which include pulsed photoelectric sensors, resistive edge sensors, and pulsed edge sensors. Only one monitored device may be wired to each input; additional devices go on the expansion board.

Control Board Inputs

CLOSE EYES/INTERRUPT (2 Terminals): For photoelectric sensor entrapment protection in the close direction. An obstruction reopens the gate fully and resets the Timer-to-Close.

CLOSE EDGE (2 Terminals): For edge sensor protection in the close direction. An obstruction reverses the gate to full open, disengaging the Timer-to-Close.

OPEN EYES/EDGE (2 Terminals): For photoelectric or edge sensor protection in the open direction. An obstruction reverses the gate for 4 seconds then stops.

Step 9 Power Wiring

The standard control box can be wired for either 120 Vac or 240 Vac; factory default is 120 Vac. Batteries are charged by the toroid transformer, plug-in transformer, or solar panels. Main power and control wiring MUST be run in separate conduits. Use copper conductors ONLY.

Standard Control Box Steps

1. Turn off AC power at the main breaker. 2. Run AC power wires to the control box. 3. Remove the toroid assembly by loosening the four screws. 4. Ensure the 120/240 plug is connected to the correct EMI board connector. 5. Connect the ground wire to the ground screw on the back of the toroid assembly. 6. Connect the white wire to NEUTRAL. 7. Connect the black wire to HOT. 8. Replace the toroid assembly. 9. Plug the J15 plug into the control board (a small spark is normal). 10. Turn ON AC power.

1. Unplug the J15 plug labeled BATT(-)(+) DC(-)(+). 2. Turn off AC power at the breaker. 3-4. Run AC power wires and remove the toroid assembly (three screws). 5. WARNING: Without a properly installed safety reversal system, persons (particularly small children) could be SERIOUSLY INJURED or KILLED by a moving gate. Introduction

The electronic controls sense the amount of force required to open and close the gate. Force is adjusted automatically when you program the limits but should be fine-tuned using the REVERSAL FORCE dial to compensate for environmental changes. The limits can be set using the control board or a remote control (a 3-button remote programmed to OPEN, CLOSE, and STOP).

Limit Setup LEDs

SET OPEN off / SET CLOSE off = Normal Mode, limits are set. Both blinking = Limit Setting Mode, limits are not set. SET OPEN blinking / SET CLOSE on = open limit not set. SET OPEN on / SET CLOSE blinking = close limit not set. Both on = Limit Setting Mode, limits are set.

Fine Tune the Force

The REVERSAL FORCE DIAL is set to minimum at the factory. The force setting should be high enough that the gate will not reverse by itself or cause nuisance interruptions, but low enough to prevent serious injury. 1. Open and close the gate with the TEST BUTTONS. 2. If the gate stops or reverses before reaching a limit, increase force by turning the dial slightly clockwise. 3. Perform the Obstruction Test after every adjustment.

Obstruction Test

1. Open and close the gate with the TEST BUTTONS, confirming it stops at the proper limits. 2. Place an object between the open gate and the fixed closed catch post, or obstruct by hand, without triggering external entrapment devices. 3. Run the gate in the close direction; it should stop and reverse on contact. If it does not reverse, reduce force slightly counterclockwise. 4. Repeat the test for the open direction.

Manual Release

In case of a power failure, the operator can be disengaged from the gate. NOTE: It is normal for the operator to run slow right after a disconnect or complete loss of power. Release: insert the key, turn it counterclockwise 180 degrees, then turn the release lever counterclockwise 180 degrees. Engage: turn the release lever clockwise 180 degrees, then turn the key clockwise 180 degrees, then remove and store the key.

Reset Button

Located on the side of the control box. Stops a moving gate like a stop button, disables the Timer-to-Close while the gate is open, and shuts off the alarm to reset the operator.

Party Mode

Press the reset button once while the gate is open to disable the Timer-to-Close; the gate stays open until the reset button is pressed again or a programmed remote is activated. Can also be enabled from a KPW5 or KPW250 keypad using a valid 4-digit PIN. NOTE: Using Party Mode at a solar site will deplete the batteries.

Operator Alarm

When the inherent force of the operator detects the following twice consecutively, the alarm will sound up to 5 minutes and the operator will need to be reset: the gate hitting an obstruction, the arm or gate being incorrectly installed, the gate not meeting specifications, hinges too tight or broken, a car pushing the gate, a foreign object on the gate frame, or the gate hitting the driveway/curb and getting stuck. Remove obstructions and press the reset button to shut off the alarm. The alarm will beep 3 times with a command if the battery is low.

Remote Control (Single Button Control)

When the gate is closed, activating the remote opens it; a second activation during the open cycle stops the gate; a third activation closes it. When the gate is open, activation closes it; if activated while closing, the gate stops and the next activation reopens it.

Solar panels must be mounted facing due south (verify with a compass), clear of shade from buildings and trees for a 180-degree arc east to west. If the panel is not casting a shadow, the battery is not charging. To optimize for winter, tilt the panel up to 15 degrees more vertical. Installation: position the mounting bracket, secure the panel to the bracket with the provided hardware, then secure the bracket to the mounting surface with lag screws.

The Solar Harness Kit (K94-37236) wires the batteries and solar panels. 33AH batteries wire in series with red, black, and a white jumper wire; 7AH batteries follow the same series wiring pattern. Solar panels wire in series for 20W, 40W, and 60W configurations depending on the number of panels used.

LiftMaster provides a UL 325 and ASTM F2200 Site Planning Safety Checklist for dealers and installers to document at installation: gate construction compliance (smooth bottom edges, access control clearance of 6 feet, barbed tape/wire height, separate pedestrian gate, no self-closing under gravity), swing-specific checks (pivot-to-column clearance under 4 inches or protected, open-gate clearance of at least 16 inches or protected), and general UL 325 checks (operator label current to standard, warning signs on both sides, both entrapment zones protected by two safety devices and obstruction tested).

A minimum of two independent entrapment protection devices must protect every entrapment zone. A swing gate operator will only operate with a minimum of one external device in either the open or close direction; if no entrapment zone exists in the other direction, only the inherent protection is required there. The checklist should be signed by the dealer, installer, and customer, and a photograph of the completed installation should be kept on file.
