Usage Class
- Class I: Residential vehicular gate for one- to four-family residences.
- Class II: Commercial/general access gate for multi-family housing, hotels, retail, or other buildings servicing the public.
- Class III: Industrial/limited access gate for factories, loading docks, or other non-public locations.
- Class IV: Restricted access gate for guarded industrial locations such as airport security areas.
UL 325 Entrapment Protection Requirements
A slide gate entrapment zone exists if, at any point during travel, the gap between the gate and any opposing fixed edge or surface, such as posts, walls, pillars, columns, or the operator itself, is less than 16 inches (406 mm) in a location up to 6 feet above grade.
A minimum of two independent monitored entrapment protection devices is required at each entrapment zone. The operator will only operate with a minimum of two independent monitored devices installed in each direction: two in the open direction and two in the closed direction. Devices are independent only if they are different types (photoelectric sensors, edge device, inherent protection device). This operator includes one inherent (built-in) device; the installer must add the others. Acceptable device types are inherent, LiftMaster monitored external photoelectric sensors, and LiftMaster monitored external edge sensors.
Page 4: Safety Installation Information and Roles
Gate systems are made up of many component parts, and the operator is only one of them. Installers must account for the hazards of each individual application. For a slide gate, all openings must be guarded or screened from the bottom of the gate to a minimum of 6 feet above the ground so a 2-1/4 inch diameter sphere cannot pass through, both in the gate and in the portion of the adjacent fence that the gate covers in the open position. Exposed pinch points must be eliminated or guarded, including guards for exposed rollers.
Pedestrians must always be provided a separate access opening located so they never come in contact with the vehicular gate during its travel. Permanently mounted access controls must sit at least 6 feet from any moving gate part. A minimum of two warning signs must be installed so each is visible from the side of the gate where it is mounted. Contact sensors should be located where the risk of entrapment exists, such as the leading edge, trailing edge, and post mounted both inside and outside of the gate.
Dealers and installers must make sure the whole system meets UL 325 and ASTM F2200, demonstrate the safety features and manual disconnect to the owner, leave all literature with the end user, and explain that the entrapment protection devices must be re-tested monthly. End users should never attempt to repair the gate system, should routinely check all functions, should discontinue use if safety systems operate improperly or the gate is difficult to move, and should keep warning signs displayed on both sides of the gate.
Page 5: Gate Construction Information
Gates should be installed according to ASTM F2200. Gates must not fall over more than 45 degrees from vertical if detached from their hardware, must have smooth bottom edges with no protrusions exceeding 0.5 inches, and must not move under gravity alone if the operator is disconnected.
For Class I, II, and III horizontal slide gates: all weight-bearing exposed rollers 8 feet or less above grade must be guarded or covered; all openings must be guarded or screened to prevent a 2-1/4 inch sphere from passing through; the gap between a fixed object nearest the roadway (such as a gate support post) and the gate frame in the fully open or fully closed position must not exceed 2-1/4 inches (other fixed objects more than 16 inches from the gate frame are exempt); positive stops are required at the fully open and fully closed positions; and the gate must have enough lateral stability to enter a receiver guide. Class IV slide gates require guarded rollers and positive stops.

With the optional Transformer Kit (3PHCONV) installed in the field, the operator is rated 208/240/480/575 Vac, 5.2/4.5/2.3/1.9 A, 60 Hz, 1 PH. System Operating Voltage: 24 Vdc transformer run / battery backup. Accessory Power: 24 Vdc, 1A max. Solar Power Max: 24 Vdc at 60 watts max. Maximum Gate Weight: 3,000 lbs. Gate Travel Distance: 4 feet minimum, 75 feet maximum. Maximum Gate Travel Speed: 1 foot/second. Maximum Daily Cycle Rate: continuous for line voltage, not continuous for solar. Maximum Duty Cycle: Continuous. Operating Temperature: -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F) without heater, -40°C to 60°C (-40°F to 140°F) with optional heater. 120 Vac accessory outlets: 6 amps (only 1 amp when the 3PHCONV kit is used).
External entrapment protection device inputs: the main board accepts up to 2 close entrapment protection devices and 1 open entrapment protection device. The expansion board adds up to 3 devices configurable to either direction, plus up to 8 edge sensors when using wireless edge sensor kit models LMWEKITU and LMWETXU. The manual includes dimensioned drawings of the operator footprint; see the official PDF.
Page 8: Site Preparation
Check national and local building codes before installation. Trench and install conduit before pouring the concrete pad or setting the post; contact underground utility locating companies first, and use UL-approved conduit. Consider the operator placement before installing the pad or post. Vehicle loops, while not required, are recommended for vehicles 14 feet or longer to keep the gate open while a vehicle blocks its path.
Safety catch rollers: install catch rollers with safety covers on the side of a post or wall, with a minimal distance of half an inch between the rollers and the gate. Do not use a gate catch post. Because the coasting distance can change with temperature, a catch post in front of the gate's path may cause the gate to hit the post in certain conditions.
Installation
Page 9 to 10: Types of Installations and Step 1 - Determine Location for Operator
CAUTION: To avoid damaging gas, power, or other underground utility lines, contact underground utility locating companies BEFORE digging more than 18 inches deep. Always wear protective gloves and eye protection when changing the battery or working around the battery compartment.
Two layouts are available. In a standard installation, the operator sits near the front roller of the gate. In a rear installation, the operator sits near the back of the gate in the open position. For either layout: lay out the concrete pad, install the electrical conduit, and pour a reinforced concrete pad (reinforced concrete is required). The pad should sit 6 inches above ground and below the frost line; check all national and local codes. Follow the layout drawing in the official PDF for exact pad dimensions and placement relative to the gate and conduit.
Page 11: Step 2 - Install the Operator
Attach the operator to the concrete pad with appropriate fasteners; the manual shows four concrete anchors, 1/2 inch by 3-1/2 inch. The operator should be near the front roller of the gate or near the back of the gate (in the open position). The space between the gate and the output sprocket must be a minimum of 4 inches. An alternative to a concrete pad is to post mount the operator using the post-mounting plate (Model MPEL), see Accessories.
Page 12 to 13: Step 3 - Attach the Chain
DO NOT run the operator until instructed.
Standard Installation
1. Manually open the gate and line up the front bracket so the chain will be level with the idler pulley and parallel to the ground, then weld the front bracket in this position. 2. Manually close the gate and line up the rear bracket the same way, then weld it in place. 3. Route the chain through the operator. 4. Connect the chain to the brackets using the eye bolt hardware; the chain should not be too tight or have excessive slack. 5. Remove the pin from the vent plug on the gear box.
Rear Installation
This layout requires two extra idler pulleys, and all exposed pinch points must be guarded. 1. Move the back pulley to the bottom hole in the operator. 2. Manually close the gate and align the bottom bracket so the chain is level with the bottom idler pulley and parallel to the ground, then weld it. 3. Align the top bracket so the chain is level with the top idler pulley and parallel to the ground, then weld it. 4. Route the chain through the operator. 5. Connect the chain to the brackets with the eye bolt hardware. 6. Remove the pin from the vent plug on the gear box. The idler pulley MUST have a safety cover.
NOTE: The chain should have no more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) of sag for every 10 feet (3 m) of chain length.
Page 14 to 16: Step 4 - Install and Wire Entrapment Protection
WARNING: ALL gate operator systems REQUIRE two independent entrapment protection systems for each entrapment zone. Entrapment protection devices MUST be located to protect in BOTH the open and close gate cycles, between the moving gate and RIGID objects such as posts, walls, pillars, columns, or the operator itself.
1. Install entrapment protection devices for ALL entrapment zones. The operator has one inherent device built in, so the installer MUST provide one additional device for each entrapment zone. 2. The operator will NOT run unless a minimum of two external devices are connected: one in the open direction and one in the closed direction. 3. Test ALL entrapment protection devices after installing the operator, and test the inherent protection using the Obstruction Test. Any gap larger than 2-1/4 inches between the gate and fixed objects must be protected; install edge sensors where the gap between the post and the gate creates an entrapment zone.
The control board has dedicated inputs: CLOSE EYES/INTERRUPT for photoelectric sensors in the close direction, CLOSE EDGE for edge sensors in the close direction, and OPEN EYES/EDGE for sensors in the open direction. The expansion board adds EYE ONLY and EYE/EDGE inputs that can be switched to either direction, plus a wireless edge input (only one wireless edge receiver per operator, with up to 4 LMWETXU transmitters programmed to it). Only one monitored device may be wired to each input.
Page 17 to 18: Step 5 - Earth Ground Rod and Step 6 - Power Wiring
Install the earth ground rod within 3 feet of the operator using a single, whole piece of wire, never spliced. Improper grounding reduces remote control range and increases susceptibility to lightning and surge damage.
The operator can be wired for 120 Vac, 240 Vac, or solar power (panels not provided). An optional Transformer Kit (Model 3PHCONV) converts 208/240/480/575 Vac input to a 120 Vac output. For dual gate applications, power must be connected to each operator, and main power and control wiring must always run in separate conduits. All control wiring to Class 2 circuits must be Power-Limited Circuit Cable Type CL2, CL2P, CL2R, or CL2X or better.
Wiring: 1. Turn off AC power at the main breaker. 2. Run the AC power wires to the operator. 3. Make sure the operator AC switch is OFF. 4. Remove the junction box cover from the electrical box. 5. 120 Vac is the factory default. For 240 Vac, unplug the power wiring connector from the 120 Vac socket and plug it into the 240 Vac socket; the accessory outlets are disabled with the 240 Vac option. 6. Connect the incoming green wire to the earth ground nut. 7. Connect the white wire to NEUTRAL. 8. Connect the black wire to HOT. 9. Replace the cover without pinching wires. The AC switch turns incoming power to the control board on or off but does NOT turn off battery power; a separate battery switch controls battery power. If you are using a plug-in transformer, set the control board switch to WALL XFMR.

Maximum wire length for the standard operator. Chart assumes copper wire, 65°C, 5% drop. Transformer kit lengths are listed in the official PDF.
Page 19: Step 7 - Connect Batteries
The batteries are charged in the circuit by the integrated transformer. 7AH batteries: 1. Turn the AC power switch OFF. 2. Turn the battery switch OFF. 3. Connect a jumper between the positive (+) terminal of one battery and the negative (-) terminal of the other. 4. Connect the red battery wire from the operator to the positive (+) terminal. 5. Connect the black battery wire from the operator to the negative (-) terminal. 6. Turn the battery switch ON. 7. Turn the AC power switch ON.
33AH batteries: the 33AH application requires battery harness K41-0102-000. Follow the same sequence, using the harness's red and black wires to connect the batteries to the operator's red and black battery wires. 33AH batteries are NOT compatible if the 3PHCONV transformer kit is installed.
Page 20 to 21: Step 8 - Dual Gate Setup
Dual gate communication is either wired or wireless, never both at once. Use only the same operator model on both gates. Wired setups keep a longer battery standby time than wireless setups.
Wireless: choose a primary operator and program all wireless accessories to it, except any wireless entrapment protection devices required for the second operator. Press and release LEARN on the primary (green XMITTER LED lights, 180 second timeout), press LEARN again (yellow NETWORK LED lights), then press the OPEN test button to assign it as network primary. On the second operator, press LEARN twice, then press the CLOSE test button to assign it as network second. Both operators beep and the NETWORK LEDs turn off when successful. To deactivate, press LEARN twice, hold LEARN for 5 seconds, then press SET OPEN and SET CLOSE together twice to relearn the entrapment protection devices, and repeat on the other operator.
Wired: disconnect all power and turn off the battery and AC power switches, trench across the driveway (use PVC conduit), and connect shielded twisted pair cable to the Com Link terminals on each control board (Com Link A to A, B to B), grounding the shield to the chassis of one operator. 22 AWG cable is rated up to 200 feet; 18 AWG for 200 to 1,000 feet; wire must be rated 30 Volt minimum.
Bipart delay and synchronized close: the bipart delay function is not applicable to slide gates. The switch is used for SYNCHRONIZED CLOSE: set it to ON for both operators so the gates close together.
Page 22: Step 9 - Install the Cover and Step 10 - Install Warning Signs
Before installing the cover, set the limits, speed, and force per the Adjustment section. Slide the cover over the operator, align the holes in the cover with the threaded holes in the operator's chassis, and secure the cover with the provided screws.
Warning signs: installers MUST install the UL required warning signs in plain view on both sides of each gate, using the fastening holes in each corner. The basic installation is now complete.
Adjustment
Page 23: Limit, Speed, and Force Adjustment
Never increase force beyond the minimum needed to move the gate, and never use force to compensate for a binding or sticking gate. Faster gate speed increases risk to pedestrians, so use the minimum speed necessary to move the gate. If one control (force, speed, or travel limits) is adjusted, the others may also need adjustment, and the safety reversal system MUST be tested after any adjustment. The TEST buttons will not work until the limits are set and the required entrapment protection devices are installed.
For dual gate applications the limits must be set for each operator, with the gate attached to the operator first. For slide gate applications the open limit and close limit MUST be set at least four feet apart.
1. Press and release SET OPEN and SET CLOSE together to enter limit setting mode. 2. Press and hold a MOVE GATE button to move the gate to the open or close limit. 3. Press and release SET CLOSE or SET OPEN for the limit being set. 4. Press and hold a MOVE GATE button to move the gate to the other limit. 5. Press and release the matching SET button. 6. Set the speed dial to the desired setting, between 0.5 ft/sec minimum and 1 ft/sec maximum. 7. Cycle the gate open and close; this sets the force automatically. The operator exits limit setting mode on its own once the limits are set.
The limit LEDs show the status: both off means limits are set (normal mode); both blinking means limits are not set; SET OPEN blinking with SET CLOSE on means the open limit is not set; SET OPEN on with SET CLOSE blinking means the close limit is not set.
Page 24 to 25: Speed Control, Fine Tune the Force, Adjust the Limits, and Obstruction Test
Speed control: the SPEED CONTROL dial is preset to minimum at the factory. Set the speed as low as possible for the application (0.5 to 1 foot per second). On a dual gate setup, set the dial on each operator to the same setting, or make sure the gate that travels farther is set faster than the other. After any speed adjustment, cycle the gate open and close to relearn the forces automatically, then perform the Obstruction Test.
Fine tune the force: the REVERSAL FORCE dial is set to minimum at the factory. Settings 1 to 3 are fixed forces that do not adjust for gate wear or temperature; settings 4 to 10 automatically increase force to compensate for wear or temperature changes. If the gate stops or reverses before reaching a limit, turn the dial slightly clockwise. After both limits are set, one limit can be adjusted independently by repeating steps 1 to 3 of the limit procedure, then cycle the gate to relearn the forces.
Obstruction test: 1. Open and close the gate with the TEST buttons and confirm it stops at the correct limits. 2. Place an object in the gate's path, or obstruct it by hand, without triggering any external entrapment device. 3. Run the gate in the close direction; it should stop and reverse on contact. If it does not, turn the force dial slightly counterclockwise. 4. Repeat the test in the open direction. Test the operator after any adjustment.
Programming
Page 26: Programming Remote Controls
Up to 50 Security+ 2.0® remotes or KPW250 keypads, plus 2 keyless entries, can be stored in memory. To program a remote, press and release the LEARN button (the green XMITTER LED lights), then press the remote button to program within 30 seconds. Three programming options exist: single button as open only, single button as open/close/stop, or three separate buttons for open, close, and stop. If you install an 86LM antenna extension, do not straighten the antenna.
You can also enter high band programming mode with the reset switch: with the gate closed, give the operator an OPEN command, then within 30 seconds at the open limit toggle the reset switch between RESET and NORMAL OPERATION three times.
Page 27 to 28: Internet Gateway, CAPXL, Erase Codes, Erase Limits, CPO, and Gate Hold Open
The LiftMaster Internet Gateway pairs through the myQ® app: connect it to a router and power, download the app, set up an account, and add your gate operator. The operator beeps when pairing succeeds.
The CAPXL Connected Access Portal communicates wirelessly with LiftMaster UL325 2016 gate operators to send open commands, monitor gate position, and send email notifications (configured in myQ Business). Up to 8 operators can be paired, one per primary and auxiliary relay; for dual gates, program the CAPXL to the primary operator. Put the CAPXL in Admin Mode (dipswitch 1 ON), select the relay on the Outputs tab, press LEARN twice on the primary operator, then select LEARN on the display. Four beeps or blinks mean you are not programming to the primary operator.
To erase all remote codes: press LEARN, then press and hold it again for about 6 seconds until the XMITTER LED flashes. To erase limits: hold SET OPEN and SET CLOSE together for 5 seconds until both LEDs blink rapidly and the operator beeps. To remove and erase monitored entrapment protection devices: disconnect the device wires, press SET OPEN and SET CLOSE together to turn both LEDs on, then press them together again to exit.
Constant Pressure Override (CPO) is for use with KPW5 and KPW250 keypads. It temporarily bypasses a faulted entrapment protection device: enter a valid 4-digit PIN, then press and hold # for 5 seconds and keep holding to keep the gate moving. Use it only in direct line of sight with no obstructions. The Gate Hold Open feature disables the Timer-to-Close and keeps the gate at the open limit, using the reset switch or a keypad PIN while the timer is running; re-enter the PIN or activate a hard input or programmed remote to restart.
Operation
Page 29: Gate Operator Setup Examples
Setup examples cover four site types: Residential (1 to 4 homes), Commercial/General Access (a community of more than four homes), Commercial (security-focused business site), and Industrial (large site requiring security). Each has recommended settings for Quick Close, AC Fail, Low Battery behavior, Anti-Tail, and the auxiliary relay outputs. For example, the Low Battery switch is normally set to OPEN for residential and general access sites so the gate opens and stays open on a low battery, and to CLOSE for commercial and industrial sites so the gate stays closed. Quick Close is normally OFF except at industrial sites, and Anti-Tail is set to ON for commercial and industrial sites to pause a closing gate instead of reversing it. The Tamper relay output (slide gates only) can signal if the gate is pushed off the close limit. An optional heater (Model HTR) keeps the gearbox and batteries warm below -4°F, with the thermostat set between 45°F and 60°F.
Page 30: Control Board Overview
The control board includes SET OPEN and SET CLOSE buttons for limits, MOVE GATE buttons for jogging the gate during setup, a SPEED CONTROL dial, a BATT FAIL option switch (critically low battery is less than 23 Vdc), a BIPART DELAY switch for dual gates, a LEARN button for remotes and the wireless network, a TIMER-TO-CLOSE dial (0 to 180 seconds, 0 is off), a REVERSAL FORCE dial, TEST buttons for open/stop/close, status LEDs, and a diagnostics display. The display shows "HL" followed by "24" for the HDSL24UL, then the firmware version and any codes.
Page 31 to 32: Manual Disconnect, Reset Switch, Operator Alarm, and Remote Control
Manual disconnect: 1. Set the reset switch to the RESET position. 2. Pull the manual release handle. To resume normal function, release the handle and set the switch to NORMAL OPERATION. On a dual gate application the handle must be released on both operators.
Reset switch: the RESET position disables gate operation (the stop LED lights); use it before servicing the gate or manually disconnecting it. To hold the gate open, run it to the open position and then set the switch to RESET. Toggle the switch to RESET and back to NORMAL OPERATION to clear an alarm. The switch is also used to enter high band programming mode, as described in the Programming section.
Relay adapter board and terminal block access: loosen the two screws of the control board bracket, slide the whole bracket to the right, then swing it open.
Operator alarm: if the inherent force sensor detects the following twice consecutively, the alarm sounds for up to 5 minutes and the operator must be reset: the gate hitting an obstruction, the gate not meeting specifications, debris on the gate track such as mud, rocks, or dirt, one or more broken axles or wheels, or a gate wheel off the gate rail. Remove obstructions or repair the gate, then toggle the reset switch to RESET and back to NORMAL OPERATION to silence the alarm. Three beeps with a command indicate a low battery.
Remote control: with a single-button remote set to open only, one press opens the closed gate and the Timer-to-Close can close it. With a single-button remote set for open, close, and stop, one press opens the gate, a second press during the open cycle stops it, and a third press closes it; with the gate open, a press closes it, and if pressed while closing, the gate stops and the next press opens it. A three-button remote gives each button its own open, close, or stop function.
Accessory Wiring
Page 33 to 34: External Control Devices, Locks, and Miscellaneous Wiring
All control wiring to Class 2 circuits must be Power-Limited Circuit Cable Type CL2, CL2P, CL2R, or CL2X or better. None of the following inputs may be used as entrapment protection.
The EXIT input is a soft open command for exit probes, telephone entry, or exit loop detectors. SHADOW holds the gate open at the limit when a loop is positioned under the gate and is only active at the OPEN limit. INTERRUPT holds the gate open and reverses a closing gate when a loop sits outside the gate, and activates quick close and anti-tailgate features when enabled on the expansion board.
The maglock output (N.C. and COM) is a normally-closed relay contact that activates before and during motor movement. The three-button control station wires OPEN, CLOSE, and STOP with a common, each overriding external safeties within line of sight. The Fire Department input acts as a hard open that overrides external safeties. Class 2 accessory power provides 24 Vdc at 1 Amp max, either switched (on during motion and while the Timer-to-Close is active, off 5 seconds after motion) or unswitched (always on). A terminal block provides additional space for accessory wiring.
Expansion and Relay Adapter Boards
Page 35 to 37: Board Overview, Auxiliary Relays, and Wiring Accessories
CAUTION: To avoid damaging the circuit board, relays, or accessories, DO NOT connect more than 42 Vdc (32 Vac) to the AUX relay contact terminal blocks.
The expansion board has switches for QUICK CLOSE (closes an opening or stopped gate when the CLOSE EYES/Interrupt loop clears, ignoring the Timer-to-Close), AC FAIL (OPEN opens the gate about 15 seconds after AC power fails; BATT keeps the gate in place on battery power), EXIT FAIL, ANTI-TAIL (pauses instead of reversing a closing gate), two configurable auxiliary relays, and EYE/EDGE direction settings. It also has 1, 2, and 3 LEDs for input status, loop detector inputs for plug-in LOOPDETLM detectors, and a wireless edge input. The relay adapter board provides additional relay outputs.
Auxiliary relay settings include Open Limit Switch, Close Limit Switch, Gate Motion, Pre-Motion Delay, Power, Tamper, and Cycle Quantity Feedback, each set by a 3-position dipswitch combination. Relays carry Class 2 low voltage only (42 Vdc / 34 Vac, 5 Amps max). A red light on Aux Relay 1 and a green light on Aux Relay 2 can show gate state.
The expansion board inputs include a wireless edge receiver connection, EYES ONLY and EYES/EDGE entrapment protection inputs (open or close direction set by a nearby switch), a Single Button Control input, a 3-button control station (Open, Close, Stop with common), and Exit, Shadow, and Interrupt loop inputs.
Maintenance
Page 38 to 39: Maintenance Chart, Batteries, and Drive Train
WARNING: ALL maintenance MUST be performed by a Trained Gate Systems Technician. Disconnect all power (AC, solar, battery) before servicing. Use ONLY LiftMaster part 29-NP712 for replacement batteries.

Notes: limits may have to be reset after any major drive chain adjustment. If lubricating the chain, use only lithium spray. Never use grease or silicone spray. Verify with a digital voltmeter that incoming voltage is within ten percent of the operator's rating.
Batteries: they degrade with temperature and use, and do not perform well in extreme cold. Replace them every 3 years with LiftMaster part 29-NP712 only, and dispose of them properly because they contain lead. The operator comes with two 7AH batteries; two 33AH batteries (A12330SGLPK) with battery harness K41-0102-000 (not provided) may be used instead, but they are NOT compatible if the 3PHCONV transformer kit is installed.
Drive train: the chain will stretch over time. To tighten it, adjust either of the two chain eye bolts, keeping sag to no more than 1 inch for every 10 feet of chain.
Troubleshooting

To view codes, press and hold STOP, then CLOSE, then OPEN until "Er" shows on the display. The display shows the code sequence number (01 is the most recent) followed by the code itself. Press OPEN to scroll to the most recent code and CLOSE to scroll toward the oldest (up to 20 saved). Press and release STOP to exit; the display also times out after two minutes. To reset the code history, press and hold STOP for six seconds until "Er" then "CL" alternate, then release. When cycling power to the control board, it is recommended that you unplug the J15 plug.
Control board status LEDs show input power, battery charging, timer state, gate motion (blink patterns show single or double entrapment), battery low, and accessory overload. Input LEDs for the open/close/stop inputs, SBC, Fire Dept, Exit, Shadow, Close Eyes/Interrupt, Close Edge, Open Eyes/Edge, and Lock show off (inactive), on (active), or blinking (active on the other operator or expansion board).

Solar Panels
Page 45 to 48: Solar Panel Requirements, Usage Guide, and Wiring
Solar panels are not provided. Requirements: a minimum of two and a maximum of six 10W solar panels (Model SP10W12V) in series, which is 20W minimum and 60W maximum. A heater cannot be used with a solar application. Solar installations are not supported in northern climates or where there are long periods of heavy fog, lake effect snow, or rain. Zone 1 (6 hours of sunlight per day) is ideal; Zone 2 (4 hours) is recommended; Zone 3 (2 hours) depends on the operator and panel placement. 33AH batteries are strongly recommended for optimal solar performance.
Standby current draw at 24V: main board with no radios, 2.7 mA; programmed LiftMaster remotes, +1 mA; myQ device or wireless dual gate, +2.4 mA; expansion board, +11.1 mA; relay adapter board, +11.1 mA; each plug-in loop detector, +3.8 mA (up to 3). Photoelectric sensor heaters (LMRRUL, LMTBUL) are not recommended in solar applications. The manual's cycles-per-day charts are based on a 1,250 lb gate with 20 ft of travel; for example, at a 5 mA draw in Zone 1, a 20W panel supports about 12 cycles per day with 7AH batteries and 14 with 33AH batteries, while a 60W panel supports about 28 (7AH) to 51 (33AH). All figures are estimates.
Position and installation: mount panels facing due south with the provided angle bracket, clear of shade from buildings and trees for a 180-degree arc east to west. If the panel is not casting a shadow, the battery is not charging. To optimize for winter, tilt the panel up to 15 degrees more vertical. Position the bracket, mark and drill holes, secure the panel to the bracket with the hex bolts, nuts, and washers, then secure the bracket to the mounting surface with the lag screws.
| Wire Gauge (AWG) | 20W of panels | 40W of panels | 60W of panels |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 | 235 ft | 115 ft | 80 ft |
| 14 | 375 ft | 190 ft | 125 ft |
| 12 | 600 ft | 300 ft | 200 ft |
| 10 | 940 ft | 475 ft | 315 ft |
Maximum solar wire length. Chart assumes copper wire, 65°C, 5% drop, 30V nominal.
Wiring: 1. Connect the (+) wire from the solar panels to the (+) pin on the CHARGE IN connector on the control board. 2. Connect the (-) wire to the (-) pin. 3. Set the WALL XFMR/SOLAR switch to SOLAR. Batteries wire with the 33AH harness as described in Step 7. Panels wire in series: 20W uses two 10W panels, 40W uses a combination of 20W and 10W panels, and 60W uses 20W and 10W panels as shown in the PDF.

Appendix
Page 53: SAMS Wiring and Dual Gate Settings
The Sequenced Access Management System (SAMS) uses Aux Relay 1 to coordinate a barrier arm with the gate: the barrier arm stays closed until the gate reaches the fully open position, then it is released to open.
For dual gate installations, set all accessories (except entrapment protection devices) and board configurations on the primary operator. Per the manual's Dual Gate Settings table: Timer-to-Close is set on the primary and OFF on the secondary; Synchronized Close is ON for both operators; the speed dial on each operator is set to the desired setting; Quick Close and Anti-Tail are ON for the primary and OFF for the secondary; the Low Battery and AC Fail switches match on both operators; remote controls 1 to 50 are programmed to the primary and 51 to 100 to the secondary; and the Internet Gateway and Garage and Gate Monitor are programmed to the primary.
Page 54: Limit Setup with a Remote Control
Requires a 3-button remote programmed for OPEN, CLOSE, and STOP. With the gate closed, press SET OPEN and SET CLOSE together to enter limit setting mode, then jog the gate to the open position using the remote, press STOP, and press OPEN again to set the open limit. Jog the gate to the close position, press STOP, and press CLOSE again to set the close limit. Cycle the gate to set the force, then follow the Speed Control, Fine Tune the Force, and Obstruction Test instructions. The close limit or open limit can also be reset on its own using the same entry sequence.
Page 55: Wiring Diagram
WARNING: To protect against fire and electrocution, DISCONNECT power (AC or solar and battery) BEFORE installing or servicing the operator. Replace fuses ONLY with a fuse of the same type and rating. See the official PDF for the complete wiring diagram showing the control board, power board, battery and solar connections, entrapment protection and loop terminals, control inputs, and accessory power outputs.
Safety Checklist
Page 58 to 60: Site Planning Safety Checklist
LiftMaster provides a UL 325 and ASTM F2200 Site Planning Safety Checklist for dealers, installers, and customers to sign at installation. Slide gate checks include: roller covers on weight-bearing exposed rollers 8 feet or less above grade; meshing up to 6 feet above grade if pickets are spaced 2-1/4 inches or more apart; a gap between the gate and fence post of less than 2-1/4 inches, with any larger gap protected by a safety device; positive stops at both the fully open and fully closed positions; and receiver guides recessed behind the receiver post when they are less than 8 feet. General checks cover smooth bottom edges, access controls at least 6 feet from the gate, barbed tape and wire heights, a separate pedestrian gate, and a gate that does not move on its own when disconnected.
Every entrapment zone needs a minimum of two independent entrapment protection devices, and a slide gate operator will only operate with two independent monitored devices in each direction. Take a photograph of the completed installation for your records and place warning signs on both sides of the gate.
Common Questions
Why won't my LiftMaster HDSL24UL slide gate operator run at all?
Check for power first. This can mean no AC power reaching the control board, an open fuse on the power board, or low or dead batteries if you are running on battery power only. Also confirm that the reset switch is set to NORMAL OPERATION rather than RESET, and that two external entrapment protection devices are connected, one in the open direction and one in the close direction, because the operator will not run without them.
How many entrapment protection devices does the HDSL24UL need?
A slide gate operator must have a minimum of two independent monitored entrapment protection devices in each direction, two in the open direction and two in the close direction. The HDSL24UL has one built-in device, so you must add at least one external photoelectric sensor or edge sensor for each entrapment zone, and the operator will not run unless one external device is connected in each direction.
What is diagnostic code 60 on a LiftMaster HDSL24UL?
Code 60 means the minimum number of monitored entrapment protection devices is not installed. Slide gate operators require a minimum of two external safety devices, one in the close direction and one in the open direction.
How do I set the limits and speed on a LiftMaster HDSL24UL?
Press and release the SET OPEN and SET CLOSE buttons at the same time to enter limit setting mode, move the gate to each limit with the MOVE GATE buttons, and press the matching SET button at each position. The limits must be at least four feet apart. Then set the speed dial between 0.5 and 1 foot per second and cycle the gate open and close to set the force automatically.
How do I tighten and lubricate the HDSL24UL drive chain?
To tighten the chain, adjust either of the two chain eye bolts. The chain should have no more than 1 inch of sag for every 10 feet of chain, and the limits may need to be reset after any major chain adjustment. When lubricating the chain, use only lithium spray and never grease or silicone spray.
How do I manually release the HDSL24UL gate when the power is out?
Set the reset switch to the RESET position, then pull the manual release handle. To resume normal operation, release the handle and set the switch back to NORMAL OPERATION. On a dual gate installation, the handle must be released on both operators. Use the manual release only when the gate is not moving.
What do diagnostic codes 47, 48, 95, and 96 mean on the HDSL24UL?
Code 47 is a motor drive fault and code 48 is a hall sensor fault. Code 95 means the motor failed to start, and code 96 is a power board fault. For each, check the related connections, disconnect all power for 15 seconds, then reconnect. If the code persists, replace the motor drive for code 47, the motor for code 48, the motor and/or motor drive for code 95, or the power board for code 96.
Can I use 33AH batteries in the HDSL24UL?
Yes. Two 33AH batteries (A12330SGLPK) can replace the standard 7AH batteries, but they require battery harness K41-0102-000. They are not compatible if the optional 3PHCONV transformer kit is installed.
Can the HDSL24UL run on solar power?
Yes. The HDSL24UL supports solar power up to 24 Vdc at 60 watts max, using a minimum of two and a maximum of six 10W solar panels in series. 33AH batteries are strongly recommended, the WALL XFMR/SOLAR switch must be set to SOLAR, and a heater cannot be used in a solar application.
What gate weight and travel distance can the HDSL24UL handle?
The HDSL24UL is rated for gates up to 3,000 lbs, with a minimum travel distance of 4 feet and a maximum of 75 feet, at a maximum travel speed of 1 foot per second. It is approved for Class I, II, III, and IV vehicular slide gate applications.
