UL 325 Entrapment Protection Requirements
An entrapment zone is any location between a moving gate or exposed operator component and a counter-opposing edge or surface where entrapment is possible up to 6 feet above grade. This includes any gap between the bottom of the gate and the ground greater than 4 inches and less than 16 inches, and any gap between the pivot centerline and the end of a wall, pillar, or column exceeding 4 inches.
A minimum of two independent monitored entrapment protection devices is required at each entrapment zone. This operator includes one inherent (built-in) device; the installer must add at least one additional external device per entrapment zone. Acceptable device types are inherent, LiftMaster monitored external photoelectric sensors, and LiftMaster monitored external edge sensors.
Page 4: Safety Installation Information
Gate systems are made up of many component parts, and the operator is only one of them. Installers must account for the hazards of each individual application. Pedestrians must always be provided a separate access opening located so they never come in contact with the vehicular gate during its travel. Permanently mounted access controls must sit at least 6 feet from any moving gate part. A minimum of two warning signs must be installed so at least one is visible from each side of the gate. Stop and/or Reset controls must be located in the line-of-sight of the gate.
Page 5: Gate Construction Information
Gates should be installed according to ASTM F2200. Gates must not fall over more than 45 degrees from vertical if detached from their hardware, must have smooth bottom edges with no protrusions exceeding 0.5 inches, and must not move under gravity alone if the operator is disconnected. For Class I, II, and III swing gates, the object covered by the gate in the open position must not exceed 4 inches measured from the pivot centerline, and clearance to any fixed object must be at least 16 inches unless entrapment protection is added.

Page 8: Site Preparation and Check Your Gate
Check national and local building codes before installation. Trench and install conduit before pouring the concrete pad or setting the post; contact underground utility locating companies first, and use UL-approved conduit. Consider operator placement before installing the pad or post. Vehicle loops, while not required, are recommended for vehicles 14 feet or longer to keep the gate open while a vehicle blocks its path.
Before installing, confirm: the gate is level, the gate and post are plumb, the gate has a smooth bottom edge with no protrusions, any wheels are removed from the bottom of the gate, the gate does not drag across the ground, and the gate swings freely on its hinges.
Installation
Page 9: Types of Installations
A standard installation mounts the operator on its own concrete pad beside the gate post. A compact installation is used when the operator arm would hit an obstruction with the gate fully open; refer to LiftMaster.com for compact installation instructions, and note that entrapment protection devices must still be employed in that area.
Page 10 to 11: Step 1 - Determine Location for Concrete Pad and Operator
DO NOT run the operator until instructed. Refer to the standard installation chart to determine the concrete pad measurements and location; dimensions A through E are measured from the center of one pivot point to the center of another. If the gate is longer than 18 feet, use the alternate dimension chart. As a rule of thumb, the distance between the gate and the concrete pad is always 10 inches less than dimension D.
NOTE: There should only be a maximum of 4 inches from the center of the hinge to the edge of the post or column; if the distance is greater, entrapment protection for that area is required.
Page 12: Step 2 - Concrete Pad and Operator Attachment
Check national and local building codes before installation. Lift the operator using its handle to avoid damage. 1. Install the electrical conduit. 2. Pour a concrete pad, reinforced concrete recommended, at least 6 inches above the ground and deeper than the frost line, tall enough to avoid flooding. 3. Secure the operator to the concrete pad with appropriate fasteners. An alternative to a concrete pad is to post mount the operator, see Accessories.
Page 13: Step 3 - Position the Gate Bracket and Step 4 - Adjust the Operator Arm Length
It may be necessary to attach horizontal reinforcement to the gate before attaching the gate bracket. 1. Position the operator arm onto the output shaft so the pin slides into the slot. 2. Measure 46 inches along the gate length from the gate hinge center. 3. Measure 27.5 inches up from the concrete pad to the gate hinge position. 4. Confirm the operator arm is level and tack weld the gate bracket in place, using the set screws on the arm to temporarily hold it while measuring.
The arm length can be adjusted if necessary, keeping both sections proportional. Close the gate and measure the distance from the gate bracket to the output shaft center (distance E). Open the gate 90 degrees without letting the arms scissor, then measure both arm sections (C and D); the arm lengths are correct as long as C + D = E.
Page 14: Step 5 - Secure the Operator Arm
Once arm measurements are verified: 1. Weld the gate bracket to the gate. 2. Weld the short arm section. 3. Weld the long arm section. 4. Remove the set screws, completely welding around the outer tubing and bracket. 5. Adjust the nuts on the operator arm so it fits snug on the output shaft while still able to swivel (handle in a 90 degree position). 6. Tighten the handle by pushing it down and test that the arm does not slip on the output shaft. 7. Remove the vent plug pin on both the top and bottom gear boxes.
Page 15 to 16: Step 6 - Install and Wire Entrapment Protection
WARNING: ALL gate operator systems REQUIRE two independent entrapment protection systems for each entrapment zone. Entrapment protection devices MUST be located to protect in BOTH the open and close gate cycles, between the moving gate and RIGID objects such as posts, walls, pillars, columns, or the operator itself.
Entrapment protection MUST be installed per UL 325 requirements: swing gate operators require the installation of the first external monitored entrapment protection device to function. Every installation is unique, so ensure ALL entrapment zones are protected. Test ALL entrapment protection devices after completing installation.
The control board has dedicated inputs: CLOSE EYES/INTERRUPT for photoelectric sensors in the close direction, CLOSE EDGE for edge sensors in the close direction, and OPEN EYES/EDGE for sensors in the open direction. The expansion board adds EYE ONLY and EYE/EDGE inputs that can be switched to either direction. Only one monitored device may be wired to each input.
Page 17: Step 7 - Earth Ground Rod and Step 8 - Power Wiring
Install the earth ground rod within 3 feet of the operator using a single, whole piece of wire, never spliced. Improper grounding reduces remote control range and increases susceptibility to lightning and surge damage.
The operator can be wired for 120 Vac, 240 Vac, or a solar panel (not provided). An optional Transformer Kit (Model 3PHCONV) converts 208/240/480/575 Vac input to a 120 Vac output. For dual gate applications, power must be connected to each operator, and main power and control wiring must always run in separate conduits.
Page 18 to 19: 240 Vac Conversion and AC Wiring
All control wiring to Class 2 circuits must be Power-Limited Circuit Cable Type CL2, CL2P, CL2R, or CL2X or better. For 240 Vac only, the accessory outlet is disabled: remove the outlet housing, unplug the power wiring connector from the 120 Vac socket on the EMI board and plug it into the 240 Vac socket, then replace the housing.
For 120 Vac and 240 Vac wiring: turn off AC power at the breaker, run the AC power wires to the operator, connect the green wire to the earth ground rod and AC ground, the white wire to NEUTRAL, and the black wire to HOT, then replace the junction box cover. The AC Power switch on the operator only turns AC power to the control board on or off; it does not turn off battery power.
Page 19 to 20: Step 9 - Connect Batteries
The batteries are charged in the circuit by the integrated transformer and serve as battery backup (or power the solar installation in the case of 33AH batteries). For 7AH batteries: turn off AC power, unplug the J15 plug, jumper the two batteries in series, connect the red and black J15 wires to the battery terminals, plug J15 back in, then turn AC power and the AC power switch back on.
The 33AH application requires the Solar Harness Kit (Model K94-37236) and an additional battery tray (Model K10-34758-2), wiring the white jumper and red/black harness wires between the J15 plug and the battery terminals in the same sequence.
Page 21 to 22: Step 10 - Dual Gate Setup
Dual gate communication is either wired or wireless, never both at once. Wired setups keep a longer battery standby time. Wireless setups are paired using the LEARN button: press it once on each operator to light the XMITTER LED, press again to light the NETWORK LED, then use the OPEN test button on the primary and CLOSE test button on the secondary to complete pairing.
Wired setups use a shielded twisted pair cable run between the Com Link terminals on each control board (Com Link A to Com Link A, Com Link B to Com Link B), with the cable shield grounded to the chassis of one operator. 22AWG cable is rated up to 200 feet; 18AWG up to 1000 feet, both at 30 Volt minimum.
The BIPART DELAY switch controls which gate opens first and closes first for overlapping decorative gates or solenoid locks (swing gate applications only; set to OFF for slide gates), and can also synchronize the close cycle when one gate travels farther than the other by setting both operators to ON.
Page 23: Step 11 - Install the Cover
Before installing the cover, adjust the limits and force per the Adjustment section. The cover has two pieces: a rear cover and a front cover, with an access door for the reset switch that can be locked with the key.
1. Remove the operator arm from the output shaft by releasing the handle. 2. Align the rear cover tabs with the chassis slots and place the cover over the operator. 3. Secure both sides of the rear cover with two 5/16-18 lead-in screws. 4. Reattach the operator arm, making sure the pin fits the slot, and secure by pushing the handle down. 5. Place the operator arm cover over the arm. 6. Align and secure the front cover to the chassis and to the rear cover with the remaining lead-in screws.
Adjustment
Page 24: Limit and Force Adjustment
Never increase force beyond the minimum needed to move the gate, and never use force to compensate for a binding or sticking gate. After any adjustment to force or travel limits, retest the safety reversal system: the gate must reverse on contact with an object.
To set initial limits: press SET OPEN and SET CLOSE together to enter limit setting mode, use the MOVE GATE buttons to drive the gate to each limit, and press the matching SET button at each position. Cycling the gate afterward sets the force automatically. The operator exits limit setting mode automatically once both limits are set.
Page 25: Fine Tune the Force and Obstruction Test
The REVERSAL FORCE dial fine-tunes force for wind and seasonal changes. If the gate stops short of a limit, increase force slightly clockwise. After every adjustment, run the obstruction test: place an object between the open gate and a rigid structure, without triggering external entrapment devices. Run the gate in the close direction; it should stop and reverse on contact. If it doesn't, reduce force slightly counterclockwise. Repeat the test in the open direction.
Programming
Page 26: Programming Remote Controls
Up to 50 Security+ 2.0® remotes or KPW250 keypads, plus 2 keyless entries, can be stored in memory. To program a remote, press and release the LEARN button (the green XMITTER LED lights), then press the remote button to program within 30 seconds. Three programming options exist: single button as open only, single button as open/close/stop, or three separate buttons for open, close, and stop.
Programming mode can also be entered using an external reset button or 3-button control station: close the gate, give an OPEN command, then within 30 seconds at the open limit press the RESET/STOP button twice.
Page 27: Internet Gateway, CPO, and Gate Hold Open
The LiftMaster Internet Gateway pairs through an online account at myliftmaster.com after connecting it to a router and powering it on, then pressing LEARN twice on the primary operator (or using the reset button sequence described in the manual).
Constant Pressure Override (CPO) is for use with KPW5 and KPW250 keypads, temporarily bypassing a faulted entrapment protection device using a valid 4-digit PIN plus holding the # key, for use only in direct line of sight of the gate. The Gate Hold Open feature disables the Timer-to-Close and keeps the gate at the open limit using the same PIN entry method, or a programmed remote to restart the gate.
To erase all remote codes: press LEARN, then press and hold it again for about 6 seconds until the XMITTER LED flashes. To erase limits: hold SET OPEN and SET CLOSE together for 5 seconds until both LEDs blink rapidly.
Operation
Page 28: Gate Operator Setup Examples
Setup examples cover four site types: Residential (1 to 4 homes), Commercial/General Access (shared community entrance), Commercial (security-focused business site), and Industrial (large business site requiring security). Each site type has recommended settings for Quick Close, AC Fail Open, Low Battery behavior, Anti-Tail, Bipart Delay, and Auxiliary Relay outputs, plus an optional heater accessory (Model HTR) for gearbox and battery temperature below -4°F.
Page 29: Control Board Overview
The control board includes SET OPEN and SET CLOSE buttons for limits, MOVE GATE buttons for jogging the gate during setup, a BATT FAIL option switch, a BIPART DELAY switch for dual gates, a LEARN button for remotes, a TIMER-TO-CLOSE dial (0 to 180 seconds, 0 is off), a REVERSAL FORCE dial, TEST buttons for open/stop/close, status LEDs, a diagnostics display showing operator type ("SG24" for CSW24UL), firmware version, and error codes, and a BACKDRIVE switch: set to MANUAL, the gate can be pushed open or closed by hand during a power loss; set to SECURE, the gate is difficult to push open or closed.
Page 30: Manual Disconnect, Reset Switch, Operator Alarm, and Remote Control
Press the reset switch to RESET/DISCONNECT, then release the handle on the operator arm to allow the gate to be opened and closed manually (on dual gates, release the handle on both operators). To resume normal function, tighten the handle by pushing it down.
The reset switch, located on the front of the operator, stops a moving gate like a stop button, and also energizes the solenoid lock and disables the maglock for two minutes.
The alarm sounds for up to 5 minutes if the operator detects an obstruction, incorrect installation, tight or broken hinges, a vehicle pushing the gate, a foreign object on the frame, or the gate hitting a curb, twice consecutively. Clear the obstruction and press reset to silence the alarm. Three short beeps during a command indicate a low battery.
With a single-button remote, pressing it opens a closed gate, stops it mid-open on a second press, and closes it on a third. The same logic applies in reverse when the gate starts open.
Accessory Wiring
Page 31 to 32: External Control Devices, Locks, and Miscellaneous Wiring
The EXIT input is a soft open command for exit probes, telephone entry, or exit loop detectors. SHADOW holds the gate open at the limit when a loop is positioned under the gate. INTERRUPT holds the gate open and reverses a closing gate when a photoelectric sensor or loop sits outside the gate.
The maglock output is a normally-closed relay contact that activates before and during motor movement. A 3-button control station wires OPEN, CLOSE, and STOP with common, each overriding external safeties within line of sight. The Fire Department Open input acts as a hard open, overriding external safeties. Accessory power provides 24 Vdc at 500mA max, either switched (on during motion and for 5 seconds after) or unswitched (always on).
Expansion Board
Page 33 to 35: Expansion Board Overview, Auxiliary Relays, and Wiring Accessories
CAUTION: To avoid damaging the circuit board, relays, or accessories, DO NOT connect more than 42 Vdc (32 Vac) to the AUX relay contact terminal blocks.
The expansion board adds switches for Quick Close, AC Fail, Exit Fail, Anti-Tail, two configurable auxiliary relays, and EYE/EDGE direction settings, plus inputs for loop detectors and a wireless edge kit. Auxiliary Relay settings include Open Limit Switch, Close Limit Switch, Gate Motion, Pre-Motion Delay, Power, Tamper, and Cycle Quantity Feedback, each set via a 3-position dipswitch combination, with an optional red/green light indicator wired to Aux Relay 1 and 2 showing gate state.
Maintenance
Page 36 to 37: Maintenance Chart and Batteries
Check entrapment protection devices and the gate monthly. Inspect the manual disconnect, sprockets and chains, accessories, electrical connections, chassis mounting bolts, and the operator every six months. Replace batteries every 3 years using only LiftMaster part 29-NP712. Always disconnect all power, including batteries, before servicing; the AC Power switch only disconnects AC power, not battery power.
The operator comes with two 7AH batteries. Two 33AH batteries (A12330SGLPK) with the Solar Harness Kit (K94-37236) and an additional battery tray (K10-36183) may be used in place of the 7AH batteries, though a heater cannot be fit into the enclosure alongside two 33AH batteries.
Troubleshooting
Page 38: Reading Diagnostic Codes

Appendix
Page 45 to 48: Solar Panels
Solar panels are not provided. Requirements include a minimum of two and maximum of six 10W solar panels (Model SP10W12V) in series, a battery tray (K10-36183) for 33AH batteries, and a Solar Harness Kit (K94-37236). A heater cannot be used with a solar application. Solar installations are not supported in northern climates or areas with heavy fog, lake effect snow, or rain. Panels must be mounted facing due south, clear of shade, using the provided angle bracket.
Page 49: SAMS Wiring and Dual Gate Settings
The Sequenced Access Management System (SAMS) uses programmable relays to determine the order in which multiple control devices operate across an opening, such as a swing gate opening fully before a barrier arm activates.
For dual gate installations, the manual recommends setting all accessories and board configurations on the primary operator: the primary operator sets the Timer-to-Close dial and Bipart Delay switch, while the secondary operator has its Timer-to-Close off. Remote controls 1 to 50 program to the primary operator and 51 to 100 to the secondary. Expansion board settings (Quick Close, Anti-Tail) are typically ON for the primary and OFF for the secondary.
Page 50: Limit Setup with a Remote Control
Requires a 3-button remote programmed for OPEN, CLOSE, and STOP. With the gate closed, press SET OPEN and SET CLOSE together to enter limit setting mode, then jog the gate to each position using the remote's OPEN and CLOSE buttons, pressing STOP to confirm each position before pressing OPEN or CLOSE again to lock it in. Cycling the gate afterward sets the force automatically.

Common Questions
Why won't my LiftMaster CSW24UL gate operator run at all?
Check for power first. This can mean no AC power reaching the control board, a blown fuse, or dead batteries if you're running on battery power only. If the diagnostic display isn't lit, start with the power source and fuses before assuming the control board has failed.
How many entrapment protection devices does the CSW24UL need?
UL 325 requires two independent monitored entrapment protection devices for each entrapment zone. The CSW24UL has one built-in device, so you must add at least one more external device, such as a photoelectric sensor or edge sensor, per entrapment zone.
How do I set the open and close limits on a LiftMaster CSW24UL?
Press and release the SET OPEN and SET CLOSE buttons at the same time to enter limit setting mode. Use the MOVE GATE buttons to move the gate to each limit, pressing SET OPEN or SET CLOSE as you reach each position, then cycle the gate to automatically set the force.
What is the BACKDRIVE switch on the CSW24UL control board?
The BACKDRIVE switch controls how the gate behaves during a power loss. Set to MANUAL, the gate can be pushed open or closed by hand. Set to SECURE, the gate becomes difficult to push open or closed if AC and battery power are both lost.
How do I program a new remote control to the CSW24UL?
Press and release the LEARN button on the control board. The green XMITTER LED will light up. Then press the button on your remote you want to program. The operator beeps and the LED turns off once programming is successful.
What does it mean when the CSW24UL alarm sounds for several minutes?
A long alarm, up to 5 minutes, means the operator detected a double entrapment condition, meaning two obstructions within a single gate cycle. Clear the obstruction, then press the reset switch to silence the alarm and reset the operator.
What is diagnostic code 60 on a LiftMaster CSW24UL?
Code 60 means the minimum number of monitored entrapment protection devices is not installed. The operator requires at least one external device connected in either the open or closed direction before it will run.
