Usage Class

Class I - Residential Vehicular Gate Operator. A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in garages or parking areas associated with a residence of one-to four single families.

Class II - Commercial/General Access Vehicular Gate. A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in a commercial location or building such as a multi-family housing unit (five or more single family units), hotel, garages, retail store, or other buildings accessible by or servicing the general public.

Class III - Industrial/Limited Access Vehicular Gate. A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in an industrial location or building such as a factory or loading dock area or other locations not accessible by or intended to service the general public.

Class IV - Restricted Access Vehicular Gate Operator. A vehicular gate operator (or system) intended for use in a guarded industrial location or building such as an airport security area or other restricted access locations not servicing the general public, in which unauthorized access is prevented via supervision by security personnel.

UL325 Entrapment Protection Requirements

A minimum of two independent* monitored entrapment protection devices are required to be installed at each entrapment zone. Every installation is unique; it is the responsibility of the installer to install external monitored entrapment protection devices in each entrapment zone. This vehicular swing gate operator will operate only after installation of a minimum of two independent* monitored entrapment protection devices in either the open or close direction. If no entrapment zone exists in the other direction of gate travel, then the inherent (built into the operator) is all that is required in that direction.

Entrapment protection device types include inherent (built into the operator), monitored external photoelectric sensors, or monitored external edge sensors. This operator is provided with an inherent entrapment protection device built into the operator that serves as one of the two independent devices. *Independent - the same type of device shall NOT be used for both entrapment protection devices.

1. Vehicular gate systems provide convenience and security. Gate systems are comprised of many component parts; the gate operator is only one component. 2. Gate operating system designers, installers and users must take into account the possible hazards associated with each individual application. 3. A gate operator can create high levels of force. Specific safety features include Edge Sensors (contact), Photoelectric Sensors, Vertical Posts, and Instructional and Precautionary Signage. 4. Install the gate operator only when it is appropriate for the construction and usage class of the gate, and all exposed pinch points are eliminated or guarded. 5. Pedestrians must be supplied with a separate access opening located so persons will not come in contact with the vehicular gate during its entire path of travel. 6. The gate must have enough clearance from adjacent structures to reduce the risk of entrapment; swinging gates shall not open into public access areas. 7. The gate must work freely in both directions prior to operator installation. 8. Permanently mounted access controls must be located at least 6 feet (1.8 m) from any moving part of the gate. 9. The Stop and/or Reset must be located in the line-of-sight of the gate. 10. A minimum of two (2) WARNING SIGNS shall be installed so each is visible from the side of the gate it's installed on. 11-12. Non-contact and contact sensor placement rules apply, including a contact sensor on the bottom edge if that edge sits between 4 and 16 inches above grade at any point in its travel.

Vehicular gates should be installed in accordance with ASTM F2200: Standard Specification for Automated Vehicular Gate Construction. For a copy, contact ASTM directly at 610-832-9585 or www.astm.org.

1.2 Gates shall not fall over more than 45 degrees from vertical when detached from supporting hardware. 1.3 Gates shall have smooth bottom edges, with protrusions not exceeding 0.50 inches (12.7 mm). 1.4 Minimum height for barbed tape is 8 feet above grade; barbed wire is 6 feet above grade. 1.5 An existing gate latch shall be disabled when a manually operated gate is retrofitted with a powered operator. 1.6 A gate latch shall not be installed on an automatically operated gate. 1.8 Gates shall not move under gravity alone if the automatic operator is disconnected. 1.9 A separate pedestrian gate shall be provided so pedestrians never contact the moving vehicular gate.

3.1.1.1 The width of an object (wall, pillar, or column) covered by a swing gate in the open position shall not exceed 4 inches (102 mm), measured from the pivot centerline, unless entrapment protection is added. 3.1.1.2 The distance between a fixed object and a swing gate in the open position shall not be less than 16 inches (406 mm), unless entrapment protection is added.

Site Preparation

Check the national and local building codes BEFORE installation. Trench and install conduit; before trenching, contact underground utility locating companies, using UL-approved conduit. Vehicle loops allow the gate to stay open when vehicles obstruct the gate path, suggested for vehicles 14 feet (4.27 m) or longer, though not required. Complete a site survey before installing Access Control Devices to determine the best device for your needs.

Entrapment protection devices are required to protect against entrapment or safety conditions in your gate application. Install a warning sign (two provided) on the inside and outside of the property, where easily visible. The gate must be constructed and installed according to ASTM F2200 standards and must fit the operator's specifications.

Check Your Gate

Gate MUST be level. Gate and gate post MUST be plumb. Gate MUST have a smooth bottom edge, no protrusions should exist. Remove ANY/ALL wheels from the bottom of gate. Gate MUST NOT hit or drag across ground. Gate MUST swing freely and be supported entirely by its hinges.

CAUTION: To AVOID damaging gas, power or other underground utility lines, contact underground utility locating companies BEFORE digging more than 18 inches (46 cm) deep. ALWAYS wear protective gloves and eye protection when changing the battery or working around the battery compartment.

Do's

Weld a horizontal bar across entire gate on any installation for strength; make sure the operator is mounted level or it will not function properly. Make sure there is slack in the operator cable. The operator can be mounted on top of the gate frame. The operator must be installed at least 12″ (30 cm) from the ground.

Don'ts

DO NOT install upside down. DO NOT install next to sprinklers or any area that may expose the bottom of the operator to water. DO NOT install on uphill or downhill gates. DO NOT install on ANY pedestrian passageways, doorways, or gates. DO NOT over-bend the operator cable. DO NOT weld the crossbar on just a few pickets, or they could bend.

1. Insert the key into the lock on the release lever and turn it 180° counterclockwise. 2. Turn the release lever 180° counterclockwise; the operator is now in manual mode. 3. Assemble the gate post bracket by placing the pull-to-open bracket on top of the post bracket. 4. Insert the bolt through both brackets and secure with washer, lock washer, and nut. 5. Attach the post bracket assembly to the operator using pins and hairpin clips. 6. Attach the gate bracket to the operator using pins and hairpin clips.

Step 2 Determine Mounting Location

Before proceeding, begin with the gate fully closed. Two methods locate the post bracket: a paper template (on the back page of the manual, must be cut out) or a tape measure. NOTE: There should be a maximum of 4″ (10.2 cm) from the center of the hinge to the edge of the post or column; if greater, entrapment protection for that area is required.

Template Method

1. Close the gate. 2. Place the template under the center of the gate hinge point. 3. Use a screwdriver or dowel rod to mark the location in front of the gate post.

Tape Measure Method

1. Close the gate. 2. Measure out 7 inches (17.8 cm) from the center of the gate hinge point and mark the first measurement. 3. Measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) from the previous mark and mark the second measurement.

Alternate Dimensions (A / B)

The ideal installation measurements are A = 7″ (17.8 cm) and B = 7″ (17.8 cm). If different measurements are used, the sum of A and B cannot be greater than 15″ (38.1 cm). Alternates: 8″ / 6″, 7-1/2″ / 7-1/2″, 6-1/2″ / 6-1/2″, 6″ / 6″.

NOTE: The post bracket assembly can be mounted several places on the gate post. 1. Open the gate to the desired open position (no greater than 100°) and hold the operator against the gate. 2. Place the operator arm against the gate post at the desired position; temporarily secure the gate post bracket with a clamp. The gate operator (arm) must be level. 3. Mark mounting holes on the gate for reference and temporarily secure the gate bracket with a clamp. 4. Align the pull-to-open bracket as CLOSE AS POSSIBLE above the screwdriver or dowel rod mark. 5. Insert a hex bolt through the pull-to-open bracket and post bracket and secure with washer, lock washer, and nut.

Test Gate Travel

NOTE: If the gate does not open and close completely, adjust the position of the gate bracket and mark new mounting holes. 1. Manually open and close the gate. 2. Ensure the operator does not bind against the pull-to-open bracket. 3. Ensure the piston does not bottom out.

Post Bracket

The gate operator (arm) must be level. 1. Mark holes for the post bracket, remove the clamp and operator, and set aside. 2. Drill adequate holes in the gate post. 3. Secure the post bracket to the gate post using hardware.

Gate Bracket

The gate operator (arm) must be level; some installations may require additional reinforcement on the gate. 1. Drill holes in the gate (or reinforcement) large enough for the gate bracket mounting hardware. 2. Secure the gate operator to the gate using hardware (not provided). 3. Manually move the gate to verify it opens and closes fully.

The control box MUST be mounted within 5 feet (1.52 m) of the gate operator, as high as possible for best radio reception, and level. 1. Remove the screws and open the control box. 2. Select the mounting holes according to your application and remove the knockouts. 3. Secure the control box to the mounting surface: A. Wall or Column: use the provided screws (4). B. Post: use U-bolts and rubber washers (not provided) for a watertight seal, keeping U-bolts from protruding more than 3/4 inch (this can short the control board).

Large Metal Control Box (XLSOLARCONTUL)

The control box MUST be mounted within 5 feet (1.52 m) of the gate operator, as high as possible for best radio reception, and level.

Wall or Column Mount

1. Open the control box; the door may be removed by opening it 90 degrees. 2. Knock out the 4 corner holes. 3. Secure the control box to the mounting surface using the provided screws (4).

Post Mount

NOTE: The post mount option is not recommended for the 33AH battery application. 1. Open the control box. 2. Select center mounting holes (top and bottom) and knock out to accommodate a 3/8″ diameter U-bolt. 3. Secure the control box with U-bolts and rubber washers (not provided) for a watertight seal.

U-Bolt Opening: Standard 3″ Round Pipe = 3-1/2″, Standard 4″ Square Post = 4″, Standard 6″ Square Post = 6″.

WARNING: Disconnect power at the fuse box BEFORE proceeding. Operator MUST be properly grounded and connected per national and local electrical codes. ALL electrical connections MUST be made by a qualified individual. ALL power and control wiring MUST be run in separate conduit.

Step 6 Earth Ground Rod

Use the proper earth ground rod for your local area. The ground wire must be a single, whole piece of wire, never spliced. 1. Install the earth ground rod within 3 feet (.9 m) of the operator. 2. Run wire from the earth ground rod to the operator; the earth ground wire will be connected later in Power Wiring. NOTE: If the operator is not grounded properly, remote control range will be reduced.

Step 7 Wire the Operator Arm to the Control Board

1. Choose a knockout in the bottom of the control box. 2. Insert the operator cable through the provided watertight connector. 3. Insert the operator cable and watertight connector into the knockout. 4. Slide the connector nut onto the operator cable. 5. Connect the operator cable wires to the connector by colored label (white to white, red to red, etc.). 6. Plug the connector into the GATE 1 terminal on the control board. 7. Tighten the connector nut. If installing one operator, proceed to Entrapment Protection. If installing two operators, continue to Dual Gate Setup.

Step 8 Dual Gate Setup

There are two options for dual gate communication: wired or wireless. Do not use both simultaneously. Wired applications have longer battery standby time. Wireless dual gates require two control boxes, one per operator arm.

Wireless Setup

Install a second operator arm and control box by following installation steps 1-7. To activate: 1. Choose an operator to be the network primary. 2. Press and release LEARN on the primary operator; the green XMITTER LED lights (180 second timeout). 3. Press and release LEARN again; the yellow NETWORK LED lights. 4. Press OPEN test button to assign as network primary. 5-6. Repeat the LEARN sequence on the second operator. 7. Press CLOSE test button to assign it as network second. Both operators beep and the NETWORK LEDs turn off when successful.

To deactivate: press LEARN once, then again, then hold LEARN for 5 seconds until the NETWORK LED blinks and turns off. Repeat on the other operator.

Wired Setup

Install a second operator arm following installation steps 1-4. Before digging, contact local underground utility locating companies. 1. Trench across the driveway to bury the extension cable, using PVC conduit. 2. Open the junction box. 3. Select mounting holes and drill two holes large enough for the watertight connectors. 4. Mount the junction box within 3 feet (0.9 m) of the second operator. 5-7. Route the operator cable and extension cable through the watertight connectors into the junction box. 8. Remove terminals from the operator cable and connect the extension cable wires to the operator cable with wire nuts, twisting like-colored wires together. 9-11. Put the wires inside the junction box, secure the cables by tightening the connector nut, and reinstall the cover.

1-7. Wire the secondary operator arm to the control board through a knockout, watertight connector, and the GATE 2 terminal, matching wire colors the same way as Gate 1.

Set the Bipart Delay (single control box)

Occasionally in dual gate installations, one gate needs to open first and close second, such as with an ornamental overhang or a solenoid lock. This is the Primary gate and connects to the GATE 1 terminal. The BIPART DELAY switch on the control board needs to be set to ON.

BIPART DELAY: used where a mag-lock, solenoid lock, or decorative overlay requires one gate to close before the other. SYNCHRONIZED CLOSE: used where one gate travels a longer distance; set BIPART DELAY to ON for both control boxes to synchronize closing.

WARNING: ALL gate operator systems REQUIRE two independent entrapment protection systems for each entrapment zone. Entrapment protection devices MUST be located to protect in BOTH the open and close gate cycles, between the moving gate and RIGID objects such as posts, walls, pillars, columns, or the operator itself.

Entrapment protection MUST be installed per UL 325 requirements: swing gate operators require the installation of the first external monitored entrapment protection device to function. Every installation is unique, so ensure ALL entrapment zones are protected, covering both open and close gate cycles. There are three options for wiring external entrapment protection devices. These inputs are for monitored devices only: pulsed photoelectric sensors, resistive edge sensors, and pulsed edge sensors. Only one monitored device may be wired to each input; additional devices go on the expansion board.

Control Board Inputs

CLOSE EYES/INTERRUPT (2 Terminals): photoelectric sensor entrapment protection for the close direction. An obstruction reopens the gate fully and resets the Timer-to-Close.

CLOSE EDGE (2 Terminals): edge sensor protection in the close direction. An obstruction reverses the gate to full open, disengaging the Timer-to-Close.

OPEN EYES/EDGE (2 Terminals): photoelectric or edge sensor protection in the open direction. An obstruction reverses the gate for 4 seconds then stops.

Solar Zones

Solar panel recommendations are based on average solar radiation and temperature effects on batteries in the given zone. Local geography and weather may require additional panels. Solar installations are not supported in northern climates due to cold weather and reduced winter sunlight. Zone 1 (6 hours sunlight/day) is ideal; Zone 2 (4 hours) is recommended; Zone 3 (2 hours) success depends on operator type and panel placement. Cycle ratings are approximations that vary by gate construction, installation, and temperature. Panels cannot be installed in areas with long periods of heavy fog, lake effect snow, or rain.

Solar Usage Guide

Typical standby battery current draw at 24V system voltage: main board with no radios, 2.7 mA; each LiftMaster remote programmed, +1 mA; myQ device or wireless dual gate, +2.4 mA; expansion board, +11.1 mA; each plug-in loop detector, +3.8 mA (up to 3 supported). NOTE: photoelectric sensor heaters (LMRRUL, LMTBUL) are not recommended in solar applications.

Cycles per day scale with solar zone, panel wattage (10W, 20W, or 30W using three paralleled 10W panels), and battery size (7AH or 33AH). In Zone 1, a 30W panel with 33AH batteries can support up to 100 cycles per day for a single gate; the same setup in Zone 3 may drop to as low as 39 cycles or fewer for dual-gate installations. All figures are estimates; actual results vary.

Position

Panels must be mounted using the provided angle bracket facing due south, clear of shade from buildings and trees for a 180-degree arc east to west. If the panel is not casting a shadow, the battery is not charging. Tall trees or buildings that don't shade the panel in summer could shade it in winter when the sun sits lower. To optimize for winter, tilt the panel up to 15 degrees more vertical.

Installation

Solar panel(s) MUST be installed facing south; use a compass to confirm direction. 1. Position the mounting bracket on the mounting surface and drill holes. 2. Secure the solar panel to the mounting bracket using the provided hex bolts, hex nuts, and washers. 3. Secure the solar panel to the mounting surface using the provided lag screws.

Wire the Batteries

One 7AH battery, or two 7AH batteries in parallel with a red and black jumper wire and fuse, wire directly to the BATT DC POWER input on the control board with a connector to the solar panels. A single 33AH battery wires with red and black wire connections to the same input.

Wire the Solar Panels

10W applications wire a single panel in parallel to the battery connector. 20W applications wire two 10W panels in parallel. 30W applications wire three 10W panels in parallel.

All control wiring used to connect external devices to Class 2 circuits of the operator must be (QPTZ) Power-Limited Circuit Cable, Type CL2, CL2P, CL2R, or CL2X or other cable with equivalent or better electrical, mechanical, and flammability ratings.

WARNING: Without a properly installed safety reversal system, persons (particularly small children) could be SERIOUSLY INJURED or KILLED by a moving gate. NEVER increase force beyond the minimum amount required to move the gate. NEVER use force adjustments to compensate for a binding or sticking gate. After ANY adjustments, the safety reversal system MUST be tested.

Introduction

The electronic controls sense the amount of force required to open and close the gate. Force is adjusted automatically when you program the limits but should be fine-tuned using the REVERSAL FORCE dial to compensate for environmental changes. The limits can be set using the control board or a remote control (a 3-button remote programmed to OPEN, CLOSE, and STOP).

Limit Setup LEDs

SET OPEN off / SET CLOSE off = Normal Mode, limits are set. Both blinking = Limit Setting Mode, limits are not set. SET OPEN blinking / SET CLOSE on = open limit not set. SET OPEN on / SET CLOSE blinking = close limit not set. Both on = Limit Setting Mode, limits are set.

Initial Limits and Force Adjustments

For dual gate applications the limits must be set for each operator. The gate MUST be attached to the operator before setting limits and force. If a mistake is made, press the reset button to start over. 1. Set the GATE switch to the 1 position. 2. Press and release SET OPEN and SET CLOSE simultaneously to enter limit setting mode. 3. Press and hold the MOVE GATE buttons to move the gate to the open or close limit. 4. Press and release SET CLOSE or SET OPEN depending on which limit is being set. 5-6. Repeat for the other limit; the operator exits limit setting mode. 7. Cycle the gate open and close using the TEST BUTTONS; this automatically sets the force. 8. For dual gates, set the GATE switch to position 2 and repeat steps 2-7.

Fine Tune the Force

The REVERSAL FORCE DIAL is set to minimum at the factory. The force setting should be high enough that the gate will not reverse by itself or cause nuisance interruptions, but low enough to prevent serious injury. 1. Open and close the gate with the TEST BUTTONS. 2. If the gate stops or reverses before reaching a limit, increase force by turning the dial slightly clockwise. 3. Perform the Obstruction Test after every adjustment.

Adjust the Limits

After both limits are set and the operator is ready to run, one limit can be adjusted independently from the other by following steps 1-3 of the Initial Limit and Force Adjustment section.

Obstruction Test

1. Open and close the gate with the TEST BUTTONS, confirming it stops at the proper limits. 2. Place an object between the open gate and a rigid structure, without triggering external entrapment devices. 3. Run the gate in the close direction; it should stop and reverse on contact. If it does not reverse off the object, reduce force slightly counterclockwise. 4. Repeat the test for the open direction. Test the operator after any adjustments are made.

A total of 50 Security+ 2.0® remote controls or KPW250 keypads and 2 keyless entries (1 PIN each) can be programmed to the operator. When programming a third keyless entry, the first is erased. NOTE: If installing an 86LM to extend range, DO NOT straighten the antenna.

Single button as OPEN only: Press LEARN (XMITTER LED lights, 30 second timeout), press OPEN, then press the remote button to program.

LiftMaster Internet Gateway (Not Provided)

Using the LEARN button: 1. Connect the ethernet cable to the Gateway and router. 2. Connect power to the Gateway. 3. Create an account at www.myliftmaster.com. 4. Register the Gateway. 5. Add devices via computer or smartphone (Gateway stays in learn mode for 3 minutes). 6. Press LEARN twice on the primary operator; the Gateway pairs if within range.

Using the reset button: follow steps 1-5 above, ensure the gate is closed, give an OPEN command, then within 30 seconds at the open limit press the reset button 3 times to enter High Band Learn Mode.

Erase All Codes

1. Press and release LEARN (XMITTER LED lights). 2. Press and hold LEARN again until the LED flashes, then release (about 6 seconds). All remote codes are erased.

Erase Limits

Press and hold SET OPEN and SET CLOSE simultaneously (5 seconds) until both LEDs blink rapidly and the operator beeps. Release; the LEDs blink slowly, indicating limits need to be set.

Constant Pressure Override (CPO)

CPO is for use with KPW5 and KPW250 keypads. It temporarily overrides a fault in the entrapment protection system, for use only in line of sight of the gate with no obstructions. 1. Enter a valid 4-digit PIN. 2. Press and hold # for 5 seconds to enter CPO; keep holding to keep the operator in motion. 3. The operator stops at a limit or when # is released.

To Remove and Erase Monitored Entrapment Protection Devices

1. Remove the device wires from the terminal block. 2. Press and release SET OPEN and SET CLOSE simultaneously; both LEDs turn on. 3. Press and release both buttons again to exit learn limit mode.

Manual Release

In case of a power failure, the operator can be disengaged from the gate. NOTE: it is normal for the operator to run slow right after a disconnect or complete loss of power. Release: insert the key, turn it counterclockwise 180 degrees, then turn the release lever counterclockwise 180 degrees. Engage: turn the release lever clockwise 180 degrees, then turn the key clockwise 180 degrees, then remove and store the key.

Reset Button

Located on the side of the control box. Stops a moving gate like a stop button, disables the Timer-to-Close while the gate is open, and shuts off the alarm to reset the operator.

Party Mode

Press the reset button once while the gate is open to disable the Timer-to-Close; the gate stays open until the reset button is pressed again or a programmed remote is activated. Can also be enabled from a KPW5 or KPW250 keypad using a valid 4-digit PIN.

Operator Alarm

If a contact sensor detects an obstruction twice consecutively, the alarm sounds up to 5 minutes and the operator needs to be reset. The inherent force of the operator (RPM/current sensor) triggers the same alarm if it detects, twice consecutively: the arm or gate incorrectly installed, the gate not meeting specifications, hinges too tight or broken, a car pushing the gate, a foreign object on the gate frame, or the gate hitting the driveway/curb and getting stuck. Remove obstructions and press the reset button to shut off the alarm. The alarm beeps 3 times with a command if the battery is low.

Remote Control (Single Button Control)

When the gate is closed, activating the remote opens it; a second activation during the open cycle stops the gate; a third activation closes it. When the gate is open, activation closes it; if activated while closing, the gate stops and the next activation reopens it.

Batteries degrade over time depending on temperature and usage; the alarm beeps 3 times with a command if the battery is low. Batteries do not perform well in extremely cold temperatures. Replace every 3 years using only LiftMaster part 29-NP712. Requires a 3-button remote control programmed for OPEN, CLOSE, and STOP. With the gate closed, press SET OPEN and SET CLOSE together to enter limit setting mode. Press and hold OPEN or CLOSE on the remote to jog the gate to the desired open position, press STOP to confirm, then press OPEN again to set that limit. Repeat using CLOSE and STOP to set the close limit, then cycle the gate to automatically set the force.

If limits are already set, the Close Limit Only or Open Limit Only can be reset independently using the same SET OPEN/SET CLOSE entry sequence followed by the relevant remote button and STOP.

LiftMaster warrants to the first purchaser of this product, for the structure in which it is originally installed, that it is free from defect in materials and/or workmanship for a period of TWO years from the date of purchase. Proper operation depends on compliance with the installation, operation, maintenance, and testing instructions in this manual; failure to comply strictly voids this limited warranty entirely.

Call 1-800-528-2806 before dismantling the product if a defect appears during the warranty period. Include a brief description of the problem and a dated proof-of-purchase receipt with any returned product.

This warranty does NOT cover non-defect damage, damage from improper installation or care, labor for reinstalling a repaired unit, or battery replacement. It also does NOT cover problems with the gate or gate hardware (springs, rollers, alignment, hinges) or problems caused by interference. Seller liability under this warranty is limited to the cost of the product.
