Intercom Systems & Telephone Entry Systems

Intercom Systems & Telephone Entry Systems

Access control intercom and telephone entry systems strengthen the security and safety of both residential and commercial buildings.

These systems are used in gated communities, multi-tenant apartment buildings, and offices, allowing residents and staff to communicate with visitors before granting entry. Compare audio-only and video intercom systems, then choose the connection and access features that fit your property.

What is an intercom system?

An intercom system provides two-way communication between people at different locations. For entry control, it connects a visitor at a door or gate with a resident, reception desk, or security team. Audio lets you speak with the visitor; video adds a view of the person requesting access.

A telephone entry system lets visitors call a resident or staff member from an entrance panel. The recipient can speak with the visitor and authorize entry through a compatible door lock or gate operator. Calling methods and opening commands depend on the model.

Commercial buildings and offices

A commercial intercom system lets reception or staff screen visitors and deliveries before granting entry. When choosing a building intercom system, check how many entrances it supports and who will answer calls during and outside business hours.

Apartment buildings and multi-tenant properties

An apartment building intercom system needs a practical way for visitors to reach the right resident. Compare resident capacity, directory or call-button options, and how administrators update users when tenants move. Multi-tenant intercom systems vary in capacity and answering options, so match the model to the property.

Gated communities and residential entrances

Gate intercom systems let residents speak with guests before opening the entrance. When comparing telephone entry systems for gates, confirm outdoor suitability, connectivity at the gate, and compatibility with the existing operator.

How to choose the right intercom or telephone entry system

• Connection: Browse wired intercom and telephone entry systems for wired options, or wireless intercom and telephone entry systems for wireless alternatives. Check the model's actual communication method, site coverage, and power requirements.

• Audio or video: Audio supports two-way conversation, a video intercom system adds visual screening. Check whether calls are answered on an indoor station, a phone, or an app, and which components are included.

• IP, phone line, or cellular: An IP intercom system uses a data network; IP does not automatically mean wireless. Telephone entry models may use a compatible phone line, cellular service, or VoIP. Confirm the required service before ordering.

• Capacity and administration: Match the number of residents and controlled entrances to the site's needs. Check whether user changes are made at the panel or through software.

• Access control integration: For an intercom system with door release, confirm compatibility with the lock, power supply, or gate operator. Compatible access readers and keypads can give authorized users another way to enter. Confirm whether they are integrated or sold separately.

• Site and replacement requirements: Check mounting style, weather exposure, available power, and existing wiring. When replacing a panel, verify compatibility with the remaining stations and control equipment.

How much does an intercom system cost?

Compare the equipment price with the cost of completing the installation. As examples, products like the Aiphone LEM-1DLS audio intercom kit at about $258 and the LiftMaster CAPXM smart video intercom at $1,619 in All Security Equipment. These are individual equipment examples, not a price range for every system or an installed quote. Check the product pages for current pricing and included components.

Budget separately for any required indoor stations, mounting hardware, locks, power supplies, wiring, and installation. Some systems also require ongoing cellular, VoIP, or cloud service fees. For example, the CAPXM requires a myQ Community subscription. Compare those recurring costs alongside the hardware price.

Frequently asked questions

How does a telephone entry system work?

The visitor presses a call button or selects a resident from the entrance panel. The system contacts the designated recipient, who speaks with the visitor and can send an opening command. A compatible lock or gate operator then responds to that command.

Can an apartment intercom system unlock the door?

Yes, when the system supports door release and is connected to compatible locking hardware. For an apartment intercom system with door release, check the lock type, power requirements, and what is included in the kit before ordering.

Does a telephone entry system need a landline?

Not always. Some models use a traditional phone line, while others use cellular service or a compatible internet-based calling service. Confirm which connection the entrance panel requires and whether a service plan is needed.

Can I answer an intercom call on my cell phone?

On supported models, yes. Some telephone entry systems call a registered phone number; some smart video intercoms use an app. Check phone compatibility, app access, and any subscription requirements for the model you choose.
