Gate Opener Safety Edge

Gate Opener Safety Edge

A gate opener safety edge keeps your family and visitors safe from harm caused by electric gates.

A gate opener safety edge optimizes your security set-up and provides a safer environment. It is applicable for both garage door and gate opener applications to ensure that it protects both the vehicle as well as the door or gate itself.

The sensing edge ability of gate opener safety edges improves access control systems and allows them to function safely and conveniently, especially in the case of motorized gates.

What Makes a Gate Opener Safety Edge Ideal?

Some may squirm at the idea that a gate opener safety edge requires contact before it signals the gate operator to stop or reverse the action. Unlike sensors that detect vehicles and people through non-contact sensing, gate safety edges are considered “contact” devices that have pressure-sensitive sensing.

So, what makes gate opener safety edges ideal for different applications?

Safety edges provide entrapment protection for electric gates and doors. Also called gate bumpers, these safety edges contain built-in sensors that send a signal to the gate operator. The safety edge has a receiver and a wireless edge transmitter that send these messages to the gate operator.

Non-monitored sensing edges are used in gate operator models developed before 2016. For those developed after 2016, a monitored sensing edge is typically applied. This allows the automatic detection of problems on the gate safety edge.

Different brands offer different sensing methods as well. LiftMaster gate operators, for example, are known for their proprietary monitoring methods. For this reason, only LiftMaster sensing edges can be used with LiftMaster gate operators.

Monitored gate opener safety edges follow the UL 325 safety standard. These are the set rules and regulations for ensuring the safe function of all automatic operations, such as garage doors, automatic gates, exterior awnings, and windows. With these standards in place comes the assurance that the gate opener edge or other safety device you have will improve the overall level of safety.
