How to Reprogram a LiftMaster Garage Door Opener – All You Need to Know | All Security Equipment

Reprogramming a door opener helps it function properly and recalibrates its security features. This post will guide you on how to reprogram a LiftMaster garage door opener easily and successfully.

You can reprogram a LiftMaster garage door opener in two ways: using the unit or its control panel.

Changing the codes and reprogramming is almost similar for all LiftMaster door openers. The only difference is the process of erasing the previous entry codes. When you are only changing the codes, erasing memories is not necessary.

Things You Need to Know Before Reprogramming

Before hitting buttons to clear your garage door opener, here are a few details and things that you need:

Garage Door Opener Unit

The garage door opener unit is the box or motor unit that operates the door opener. For overhead door openers, you can find it by the garage roof. Wall-mounted garage door openers have their motor units by the wall near the door.

Learn Button

Inside the garage door motor, you will find the LEARN button that can be square or round. When you press and hold the LEARN button, it acts as the reset button for the garage door opener.

Depending on your LiftMaster model, the button color may be yellow, orange, purple, red, or green. Its color matches the antenna dangling from it.

The color coding of the LEARN button corresponds to the frequency of the garage door opener remote that will pair with it.

You can use the antenna color for reference if you buy a universal remote control. It will save you a trip up the ladder for the LEARN button color you need for a compatible remote control.

Control Panel

Some LiftMaster garage door openers come with a separate control panel. It’s a little black box that allows you to reset the door opener without opening the motor unit. There are four types of control panels:

Remote Control Program Button

The garage door remote control, which you use as a key, has its own program button. But, these buttons are located at different places depending on the LiftMaster remote control type.

For the LiftMaster 890 MAX and 895 MAX, you can access the program button by inserting a pin into a hole at the side of the controller. In the 893 MAX controller, the program slot is at the back of the remote.

Please refer to your specific LiftMaster garage door remote control manual for precise instructions.

The first thing you need when reprogramming a door opener is to erase the previous remote controls and keyless entry data. You also need to delete the myQ devices previously linked to it.

To erase the garage door memory:

  1. Open the garage door opener unit panel and locate the LEARN button.
  2. Press and hold the LEARN button until the LED light bulb next to it goes off. All remote controls and keyless entries are now erased.
  3. To remove all myQ devices, do the “press and hold” step twice.

After clearing the memory, you can program your LiftMaster garage door opener.

  1. Press the Program Button found on your remote control.
  2. Press and release the LEARN button (do not hold) until the indicator light turns on for about 30 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the remote control button you want to program with the door opener.
  4. Wait until the light flashes twice before releasing to confirm successful programming.
  5. Repeat steps 2 to 4 to reprogram additional remote controllers operating with the garage door opener.

If the motor unit has no indicator lights, two confirmation clicks indicate successful reprogramming.

You can now test the garage door by pressing the remote control to see if it works.

How to Reprogram a LiftMaster Garage Door Opener With the Control Panel

After erasing the memory from the garage door opener unit, you can reprogram your remote using the control panel. The LEARN button in the control panel is accessed differently.

  1. Access the LEARN button
    • The control panel has a straightforward button labeled LEARN for multi-function and motion-detecting. Press this button twice, and the LEARN indicator light will fire up.
    • For the smart control panel with LCD, navigate the button in the sequence: Menu>Program>Remote
    • For doorbell-type, press and hold the side button simultaneously with the front button until the light stays on.
  1. Press and hold the remote button you want to program with the garage door opener.
  2. The motor unit will flash twice or click twice for units without a garage door opener light.
  3. Press the remote control to test if the programmed button is successful.

Reminder When Reprogramming a Garage Door

Knowing how to reprogram a LiftMaster garage door opener is handy. Customizing the remote is necessary for security if you are moving into a new house or rented apartment. It prevents unauthorized entry, especially if the property has previous owners.

It’s also important after changing the garage door operator battery, as it loses stored information after replacement.

To reprogram a garage door opener successfully, ensure no other nearby devices are operating. Remote buttons and key fobs are transmitters that send signals to the receiver or gate operators and openers.

If your neighbour happens to be accessing their gate at the same time you’re programming your remote, there’s a possibility that it may connect their remote controller to your garage instead.

At All Security Equipment, we advise reprogramming and changing garage door codes at least twice a year. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized entry into the property.

You may not always remember lending out your garage codes or programmed remotes, but the LiftMaster does. Adding a keyless entry like a garage door wireless keypad is also good for added security.
